Gregory Lynn Shivers was born on June 21,1949, in Shreveport, Louisiana to parents Henry and Grace Shivers.
In 1951, the family moved to Sunnyside,
Houston, TX in search of a better life. This relocation enabled Gregory to attend school in the Houston Independent School District. After graduating from Attucks Middle School and Worthing High School, he enrolled at Texas Southern University. Gregory earned a bachelor's degree from TSU on June 4, 1972, making his parents very proud of his academic achievements.
Gregory enjoyed playing sports! At Worthing High School, he played baseball and football. After graduating from high school, he went on to coach baseball as Head Coach with Lou Reed as his Assistant Coach. Eventually Coach Shivers and Asst. Coach Reed would lead the Worthing HS team to a winning season.
Gregory was very talented and creative in the business world. He worked for companies such as Nestle's Foods, Louis & Koker Store, Harris County Audit Dept., and Precinct 7 under the leadership of Constable Mae Walker. Of all of the jobs Gregory held, he most enjoyed working as an educator and coach at his alma mater, Worthing High School, under the leadership of Principal Larry Alexander and Asst. Principal Ronnie Evans.
Gregory grew up in the church and was baptized at St. Emmanuel Baptist Church, under Reverend Calvin Scott. He and his brother, Clifford Roy Shivers, were the first youth to join the Youth Usher Board at his church. Gregory met and married Paralee Roberson on October 11, 1986. He then united with Holy Trinity MBC, Rev., Dr. Richard Jewel Rose, Pastor. During this time, Gregory's son, Samson Shivers, was born. In 2008, the family relocated and the Shivers family united with Pisidia MBC, Rev. Albert Walker, Jr., Pastor. Gregory served as an usher at Pisidia MBC until his health would no longer allow. Samson Shivers (son) continued to serve as church percussionist until leaving to attend college at Tennessee State University.
Gregory was a leader and servant in the community. He organized and managed the Houston Chargers Softball Team. He was a great coach and manager of young adults throughout the Houston area. Gregory also coached little league football and baseball teams in Southeast Houston. In addition, he achieved many awards for leadership and sales during his professional career.
Gregory served as a Board Member of the Women Empowerment Training Institute (WETI), a non-profit organization in Houston that assists youth (girls and boys) with mentorship, self-confidence and self-development as well as awards scholarships.
