Gregory Alan Townsend, age 58, of St. Albans, WV, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2023, with family by his side.
Born, September 10, 1965, in Charleston, WV, he was the son of Keith Alan Townsend and Claudia Ann Payne Townsend.
Greg was a graduate of St. Albans High School Class of 1984. He was a much-loved son, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, nephew, and friend. He had many interests, but weather and sports were his passions. If he wasn't watching the Weather Channel, he was watching a sports channel. His family always said he missed his calling and should have become a meteorologist, but he enjoyed acting like one through his weather group on facebook. He never failed to post the local weather or beautiful pictures of God's creation. He loved all the seasons but especially enjoyed seeing snow and going to the beach, specifically, Myrtle Beach.
He was an avid sports fan and especially loved the WVU Mountaineers, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Cincinnati Reds. He had lots of opinions on those teams and wasn't afraid to tell you. Nothing made him laugh more than getting people riled up on facebook with his sports posts! That was just Greg, he was passionate! And nothing brought him greater joy than being able to go to a WVU game in Morgantown. He lived for those times.
He loved the holidays with Christmas being his favorite and he never got tired of telling stories of his childhood in Sun Valley. He loved his "Sun Valley gang" and they were like family to him.
Greg was most proud of his family. He loved his boys and was so proud of all their accomplishments and loved being "Papa Greg" to his granddaughter. He adored his parents and never failed to thank them for all they did for him. He even loved his bratty little sister who enjoyed tattling on him when they were kids! He was a great uncle to his nephews and niece and always made them feel loved and special.
He will be missed beyond measure and always remembered with love.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sons, Daniel Johnston and Christopher Townsend, both of St. Albans; sister, Laurel Franklin (Dale) of Anderson, SC; granddaughter, Layla Johnston of St. Albans; nephews, Stephen Franklin of Easley, SC, and Jarrett Franklin (Haley) of Moncks Corner, SC; niece, Lily Looper (Justin) of Pelzer, SC; uncles, Steve Payne (Lynn) of Charleston, WV, and Doug Payne (Marcia) of Winston Salem, NC; and numerous beloved cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hall and Phyllis Townsend and Claude and Patricia Payne.
The family will receive friends on Friday, November 24, 2023, from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm at Barlett-Nichols Funeral Home in St. Albans. The memorial service will begin at 1:00 pm in the Chapel. Interment will be at Cunningham Memorial Park.
