Gretchen Deane Courtright Britton left this world peacefully on Friday July 25th, 2025 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
A beautiful, loving wife and mother, Gretchen devoted herself wholeheartedly to her family and to the pursuit of learning. She was always ready to help any child or teenager become not only a better reader but a better human being. Her days were filled with books, gardens, and family. She gave freely and generously.
Gretchen earned her Master's degree in Primary Education from Indiana University and remained a lifelong learner, continually educating herself and those around her.
She leaves behind a loving husband, Clifford Lee Britton; her three children, James Wayne Britton, David Joseph Britton, and Rachel A. Ryder; and three grandchildren Alia Britton-Grady, Miranda Britton Moore, and Malachi Alexander Florini Britton. She also leaves behind her spirited Welsh Corgi, Molly Wobbles, and hundreds of friends whose lives she enriched.
Funeral services for Gretchen will be held on Thursday, July 31st at 2:00 pm at Chandler Funeral Home-Whitaker Chapel in Gosport. Burial will follow at Gosport Cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm and again one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
