Published by Legacy on Nov. 7, 2025.
CAPT (Ret.) Grey Allen Glover, Sr., age 77, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on November 4th, 2025. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, Boy Scout, and distinguished naval officer. Grey lived a life marked by leadership, service, and love.
Born in 1948 in Youngstown, Ohio, Grey was the second of three sons of Wilfred Aldren Glover, Jr. and Donna Mae (Sauer) Glover. He graduated from Austintown Fitch High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Youngstown State University. As a teenager, Grey met his high school sweetheart and wife of nearly 50 years, Joyce Glover (deceased). Together, they built a life filled with love and cherished memories. Their home rang with Joyce's singing and laughter.
A proud Eagle Scout, he credited Scouting with shaping his leadership and values, which were qualities he carried throughout his life and naval career. He remained deeply committed to the Boy Scouts, mentoring countless young men of Troop 481 and helping many achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
Grey's naval career was defined by his dedication to excellence and his commitment to guiding and uplifting those under his command. Among his many accomplishments, he was especially proud of his command of the USS Macdonough (DDG-39) during Operation Desert Storm, where he led 350 sailors in the Gulf War. His dedicated service earned him the Persian Gulf War Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal. After his retirement, he continued serving the Navy as a senior consultant until 2017, sharing his vast expertise and mentorship with a new generation of naval professionals.
Grey found his greatest joy in family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rebecca "Becky" Glover, whom he lovingly called his Gem. They shared a kindred spirit and Becky reignited his sense of adventure. Together, they enjoyed traveling, laughing, and expanding their hearts to build one big, blended family that truly loves one another. Becky's devoted care and steadfast love brought Grey and their new family peace and comfort, especially in his last year.
Grey is also survived by his children Meredith Earlene Glover, Grey Allen Glover, Jr. (Jennifer), and Brian Audley Glover (Magdalena); his children by marriage Jason Allen Russell, Brandon Michael Russell (Heather), and Ashley Elizabeth Jernigan (Worth); and his brothers Wilfred ("Chip") Glover III and John Glover (Mary Kay). He was also a proud grandfather to David, Shelby, Gavin, Addison, Kearstin, Lane, Landon, Emerson, and Grey III, all of whom brought immense pride and happiness to his life.
Those who knew him will remember his kindness, integrity, generosity, sharp wit, and unwavering commitment to helping others reach their fullest potential. His legacy lives on in the sailors he led, the Scouts he mentored, and the loved ones he inspired every day.
A memorial service will be held at New Creations UMC in Chesapeake on Friday, November 14th at 4:00pm, and an internment with military honors will be held Saturday, November 15th at 12:00pm at Princess Anne Memorial Park in Virginia Beach.
