Grover Nevin "Tom" Englebert passed away on February 4, 2025, at Gettysburg Hospital, he was 94. Tom was born at home in Hunterstown on April 30, 1930. He was the son of the late Huber, Sr. and Bernice (Evans) Englebert.
Tom was a graduate of Gettysburg High School, Class of 1948. He worked for G.C. Murphy in Gettysburg until 1950 when he enlisted in the United States Air Force for four years, serving in the Korean War in 1951 and 1952. He was a radar and gunsight mechanic on F-80 and F-84 aircraft Upon leaving the Air Force in 1954 Tom worked at his parents' store in Hunterstown. In 1960 he began working at the former Dolly Madison furniture factory in Gettysburg as an inspector. In 1970 Tom began working at the Allis-Chalmers Nuclear Division (later PCC) in York, PA as a Nuclear Hand-Grinder. He retired from PCC in 1994.
Tom was a long-time first baseman for the Hunterstown Cardinals and later New Oxford Owls of the South Penn baseball league. He was a skilled hunter, fisherman, and trapper. He particularly enjoyed fishing for trout on the Yellow Breeches Creek and the Conewago Creek and spent many fine days of his retirement on these creeks.
Tom is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary J. (Smith) Englebert of Gettysburg and his sons, Jeffrey Englebert and his wife Marcia of East Berlin and Ronald Englebert of Gettysburg. Ronald served as Tom's caregiver for the last several years of his life. Tom is further survived by his grandchildren, Russell Englebert and his wife Genevieve, John Englebert and his wife Amanda, and Sarah Madilia and her husband Josh. He is also survived by a sister, Violet Miller and her husband Richard of Gettysburg.
Tom was predeceased by a son, Kenny, his parents, a sister Marion (Englebert) Swope, and a brother Huber, Jr. "Joe" Englebert.
Tom was a member of and long-time greeter for The Great Conewago Presbyterian Church in Hunterstown. Friends may call the family at home. A private service will be held with a celebration of life and remembrance planned for a later date.
