During his military career, he rose to the rank of Captain, tank commander in Korea, and remained active in the Army Reserves until 1968.
Gus attended East Tennessee State University (ETSU), where he earned his bachelor's degree. He excelled in the insurance industry at Allstate Insurance for 27 years before retiring. He enjoyed golf and watching Duke University basketball games. Gus was an incredible father who truly deserved to win the Best Dad Award.

A graveside service will take place at 11:00 am on Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025, at Pleasant Forest Cemetery (401 Concord Rd, Farragut, TN).
"He was a great dad, husband, son, and brother. May he have a large field to plow with a good tractor in Heaven. Love you Dad". - David Simerly (son)
The family would like to say a special thank you to Central Baptist Bearden in Knoxville, TN, for the support and care they provided.

David & Family: Although almost everybody called him Gus, he was always Uncle Leon to me and my sister, Brenda. What a GREAT and kind man he was: always pleasant, cheerful, thoughtful, good attitude, great sense of humor, and was always kind to my family (Loraine, Earl, and Brenda). I didn't see him often in later years, mostly due to my phobia about interstate driving, but I thought of him often. I was glad that I called him last month and had a long visit over the phone, and enjoyed the pictures he texted me. I will certainly continue to be in prayer for David and his family--it hurts so much to lose a good parent--but one day we will all be reunited in Heaven with an eternity to enjoy each other and worship God!
