Gwen B. Gettys, a beacon of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2025, in Dublin, GA, at the age of 89. Born on July 9, 1935, in Wrightsville, GA, Gwen was the cherished daughter of the late Emery Burney Barker and Kathryn Watson Barker Gannon. Her life was a testament to her faith-filled spirit and her unwavering commitment to her family and community.
Gwen's early years were spent in the halls of Dublin High School, where she exuded school spirit as a cheerleader. After graduating, Gwen dedicated herself to building a life filled with love, service, and the simple joys of everyday experiences. In her professional life, Gwen was a pioneer in community service, starting the Welcome Wagon in Dublin, which helped countless families feel at home in their new community. Her involvement with the First Baptist Church of Dublin was profound, as she held many duties over the years, touching the lives of many through her service and dedication. Gwen's love for her community was further expressed through her active membership in the Red Hat Society, where she formed lasting friendships and shared countless moments of joy.
Gwen's love story with her late husband, William Carl Gettys, Jr., was one of deep companionship and mutual respect. Together, they raised a family that included their sons, John Barker Gettys (Tonya), Marshall Gannon Gettys (Bonnie), and the late William Carl Gettys, III (Debbie), as well as their daughter, Kathryn Gettys Cullens (Andy), all of Dublin.
Her role as a grandmother was one that Gwen embraced with every ounce of her being. She was a guiding light to her grandchildren, John Barker Gettys, Jr., Blake Alexander Gettys, Grady Carl Cullens (Kelsey), Nathan Andrew Cullens (Kaitlin), Leann Brooke Gettys (Joy), and Abbie Caroline Gettys. Her legacy continues to live on through her numerous great-grandchildren, who will carry forward the memories of her loving embrace and the stories of her generous spirit.
An avid card player, Gwen's competitive spirit and joy for the game brought laughter and camaraderie to many gatherings. Her culinary skills were unmatched, and her garden was a reflection of her nurturing soul, with every bloom and harvest shared generously with friends and neighbors. Gwen's love extended beyond her family and friends, as she was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, be they people or animals.
Graveside services for Mrs. Gettys will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at Northview Cemetery. Chaplain Rick Tooley will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are encouraged to the Dublin-Laurens Co. Humane Society, 618 Firetower Rd., Dublin, GA 31021.
