Gwendolyn Burrill Hatfield, of Yorktown, Va. went to be with the Lord on April 16, 2025 after a brief illness. She was a resident of the peninsula for 65 years.
Gwen, 86, was born in Shenandoah, Va., where she met her future husband, Jack, in the third grade. In high school, she was in all state band, senior class president, and on the varsity basketball team. She also played piano for the worship service at her church. She graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1956 and married Jack after he completed his first year of college. Gwen worked to support them both while he studied for his bachelor's degree in engineering at UVA. After Jack's graduation, they moved to the peninsula. Gwen was a homemaker who was active in the community. She enjoyed attending church, gardening, her pets, antiques, the beach, and time with family. She loved the Lord Jesus as her Savior and Redeemer.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Judson Hatfield and her parents, Kenneth LaMark Burrill and Helen Lillard Burrill.
She is survived by a daughter, Susan Howland (Hatfield) and her husband, Greg Howland, of Yorktown, Va.; a grandson, John Hatfield Howland and his wife, Erin Howland (Kelly), of Yorktown, Va.; a granddaughter, Melissa Ann Miller (Howland) and her husband Micah Miller, of Poquoson, Va.; and six great-grandchildren.
A small graveside service will be held at Beahm's Chapel Cemetery in Luray, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Care Net Peninsula, 1101 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601. The website for online donations is cnpeninsula.org.
