He is also survived by his nephew, Wilbur Boren Jr, D.D.S. (Nancy) of South Bend, Indiana.

Born in Evansville, Indiana, on Sep 13, 1933, Bill was the son of Homer and Hazel (Hudson) Gilmore and brother of Margaret Boren. An avid athlete, he played basketball and football for Bosse High School and was a diver at Indiana University.

Following in the footsteps of his brother-in-law, Wilber Boren Sr., D.D.S, Bill decided to attend dental school. He completed his first year of pre-dental college at IU, Bloomington, attending on a diving scholarship. He then returned home to Evansville College to focus on pre-dental training. He married Sharon Greubel in 1954 and moved to Indianapolis where they raised their four children. Bill attended IU School of Dentistry from 1954-1958. He became assistant Dean at the school at age 26 under Maynard K. Hine. Bill authored several operative dental textbooks that were used worldwide and taught courses around the globe. He was active in the American Dental Association and the Indiana Dental Association. He was a dental consultant for the Air Force, the Navy and the US Army. Bill also edited the Journal of the Indiana Dental Association from 1974-1990.

Bill practiced dentistry in Broad Ripple from 1970 until 1985 when he returned to the IU School of Dentistry as Dean for 11 years.

Upon retirement from the dental school, Bill volunteered in the Wishard Community Dental Clinics. Subsequently, he served as the Executive Director of the Indiana Science Education Foundation (SEFI) running the State Science Fairs. The SEFI committee brought the International Science and Engineering Fair to Indianapolis in 2006, for which Bill received a Sagamore of the Wabash award from Governor Mitch Daniels.

Bill was Past-President of the IU Alumni Association (1993) and remained an avid fan and supporter of Indiana University and the alumni association throughout his life. Late in life, he received a letter for diving at IU, becoming a member of the “I Association”.

Bill loved the outdoors and was an avid gardener and golfer. Throughout his life, he was a voracious reader and passionate about education. He helped numerous students pursue a career in dentistry and was always excited about people who wanted to get more education, no matter what field.
