Harmon Michael Mullins, affectionately known as Mike, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2024 at Baptist Oxford at the age of 76.
He was born on March 10, 1948, to Harmon and Ruth Williams Mullins in Brookhaven, MS. Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James Boyd Mullins.
Mike is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 43 years, Mary Annette Mullins; his siblings Jane Kent of McCall Creek, MS, and Jo Hanes (Gary) of San Marcos, CA; his children: Scott Mullins (Lindi), Amy Mullins Carnett (Mike), Gary Blaylock (Aimee), Dusti Blaylock Maroney (Chris), Marshal Mullins (Ella), and Clint Mullins (Michelle Scott); his grandchildren: Garrett Blaylock (Kelsey), Summer Murphy, Brant Blaylock, Daeja Bynum (Aden), Averi Maroney (Austin), Michael Grant Mullins, Aubri Maroney, Addie Maroney, Graycie Mullins, and three great grandchildren.
Mike was known by many for his dedication and commitment to hard work. He spent over three decades working for Kroger in a number of different positions and served as store manager 29 years before retiring from the company to become the Director of Parks and Recreation for the city of
Southaven, MS until his final retirement to his little "peace" of heaven in Laws Hill, MS. Anyone who knew Mike, knew how much he loved the outdoors and loved forming his land in Laws Hill. He loved wielding a chainsaw, bulldozing dirt mounds, plowing fields on his John Deere tractor, and tending to his cattle, rain or shine. While serving the city of Southaven as Director of Parks and Recreation, Mike's love for the outdoors was extended to overseeing the construction of the Snowden Grove sports complex, as well as the Snowden Grove Ampitheater, now the BankPlus Ampitheater. Both are recognized as landmarks by the Southaven community and beyond.
Mike coached his first baseball team at the age of 16 and continued to coach and impact many young men throughout Desoto County for years to come. He notably coached the Steelers at Cherry Valley for 21 years and Team Pepsi for many years also. Mike played an integral part in bringing competitive baseball and softball to his community, and his efforts contributed to growing youth sports across the city of Southaven. The impact that Mike has made through his years of coaching and mentoring is immeasurable, but if you are trying to capture the legacy of Mike Mullins in a picture, a short drive through Snowden Grove or Greenbrook Parks on a hot Saturday in July would be the perfect place to start. Those that loved and knew Mike will know that he was quite often referred to by, Moon. Mike will be always be remembered for who he was and his legacy will be carried in the hearts by all that were fortunate enough to have loved him.
A visitation will be held in his honor on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a funeral service immediately following at 4:00 p.m., all at Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven. Interment will be at Desoto Memorial Gardens. Coleman Funeral Home of Southaven is handling arrangements.
