Dr. Harold Eist was born on June 5, 1937 in Edmonton, Alberta and earned his Medical Degree from the University of Alberta. He was married to his wife, Ann for 61 years and he devoted his life to her, his family, and the patients he served. Dr. Eist was a dedicated Psychiatrist serving the local, national and global community since 1967. He ceaselessly strived for patient privacy and the highest quality mental healthcare. He was a champion for the mentally ill and has been globally recognized as a warrior for the disenfranchised. Dr. Eist gave voice to this "voiceless" community through promoting progressive, equitable and fair practices. One of the achievements he was most proud of was the creation of the "Patient's Bill of Rights'', supported by 1 million health care professionals, aimed toward protecting patients from the harmful practices of the for-profit healthcare industry.
Dr. Eist was the Medical Director of the DC Institute of Mental Health's three clinics from 1967 until 1986 serving the greater Washington DC's most needy. The clinic received the APA's Gold Award and was renamed "The Harold I. Eist, MD Clinic." He maintained an active private practice for 54 years and also deeply enjoyed his work as an educator in the field – teaching and mentoring were life-long passions. Dr. Eist served as a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Howard University and George Washington University medical schools. At Howard he authored the syllabus for psychiatry, and he thrived in his interactions with upcoming physicians.
Harold was President of the American Psychiatric Association, a three-time president of the Washington Psychiatric Society and president of the Suburban Maryland Psychiatric Society, as well as the founder and president of the American Association of Private Practice Physicians. Recognized throughout his career for his efforts on behalf of patients, Dr. Eist was selected as Washingtonian of The Year in 1979. In his role as the US representative to the World Psychiatric Society, he traveled the world to advocate for better mental healthcare and patient rights and was a distinguished guest lecturer in eleven countries. Harold Eist had a transformational impact on the government, trainees in psychiatry, and the public, which has diminished the stigma to which those with mental illness are too often exposed.
Dr. Eist was passionate about living life to the fullest and he exemplified living one's values. Harold was an avid reader. He enjoyed fishing, walking by the ocean, and he found endless joy in the arts, music and sports. Most happy with Ann by his side eating good food, drinking wine, spending time with friends, and celebrating life.

I don´t think DCIMH would have survived so long without him. He was the glue that held DCIMH together. He also helped me get a great therapist. So long Dr. Eist, rest in peace. Norman

I was so sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Eist, a wonderful and compassionate man that I had the pleasure and good fortune of knowing for over 30 years. He cared deeply about his fellow man, and most especially those who struggled with mental illness. He was often the last hope for the hopeless, helping so many through the most difficult times of their lives. I will always remember his endearing sense of humor, his unique perspective on life itself and his kind spirit. My deepest of condolences go out to Mrs. Eist and his children for their tremendous loss and offer prayers for peace during this very difficult time in their lives. He will truly be missed but his legacy of hope will live on in the lives of all those that he has helped over the years. There was no other like Dr. Eist...

Dr.Eist was my physician for many years starting in my late adolescence. He was a very perseverant doctor who never ever gave up on his patients. He was the epitome of a mensch and I hope that every patient in such a journey has a doctor like Dr.Eist standing in their corner.

As a co-founder and Past President of DCIMH, I worked closely with Harold in establishing DCIMH as the premiere non-profit mental health clinic that it became in DC. From very humble beginnings and only about 13 original patients, Harold led it to its zenith with three clinics serving hundreds of needy patients. His vision and skill were what made it what it was. And the care that it provided was so desperately needed.

Although we sometimes disagreed, Harold was a good friend, whose wisdom and skill I highly respected. Also
I shared his love of wine, and I still have a bottle of 1949 Ch. Filhot sauternes which he gifted to me many years ago and which I still have not opened. I will do so now, and toast Harold.

After God created Harold, God broke the mold!

My wife, Ann, joins me in expressing deepest sympathy to Ann Eist and to Harold's children.

Eist, a name that announces itself - so fitting for you. You command attention because you exude intelligence, wit, humour and sensitivity. When you experienced pleasure- it was orchestral. A drop of wine could send you into solos of praise and description. Your fine dining with Ann composed stories that left your audiences salivating and envious. You gobbled up life and demanded more. You savoured every moment - in your work, your travel, your friends and especially your Anne. Howard and I never had enough time with you but, in our minds, you are present and loud.
Love you,
Linda

Eist: You were funny, wise, larger-than-life; a leader and positive presence in the worlds of psychiatry, psychoanalysis and care for the disanfranchized.
You also knew a thing or three about high-voltaged California´s Cabs and caloric-fueled food.
You laughed robustly and loved even better!
With affection - Book (Howard & Linda )

Harold Eist was an early influence in my time at DCIMH, a challenging supervisor and an inspiring leader. His devotion to the work and to the patients touched many.

We shared a cab after leaving an event at the convention. Harold knew of my interest in sport psychiatry, and enthusiastically talked about his days as a goalie in his youth. It was wonderful hearing his stories and getting his unique perspective on the goalie mentality. I think he adopted that mentality:"The buck stops here", and carried it through in all his work. A great man who will be greatly missed.

Please accept my condolences at the passing of Harold. Harold was a great friend to my Father, Mother and family while he was studying in Edmonton and later. My Father especially had very fond memories of his days with Harold when they were room mates.
