New Castle, NH – Captain William Baker Marshall, III, USN, Retired, age 86, of New Castle, passed away on Sept. 22, 2025 at Portsmouth Hospital. For 50 years, he was the beloved husband of Nancy (Scurry) Marshall. He was the adoring father to his daughter, Laura Marshall Belden (Cory Belden) of Rye, NH; and is also survived by his two beloved grandchildren, William "Liam" David Belden and Brooks Marshall Belden, who affectionately call him "Baba". Bill was the brother of the late Susan (Marshall) Steeves. Bill leaves behind, and was loved by, many other extended family members, friends, and friends who are like family. Nancy and Laura are incredibly grateful for everyone's support, love, and sharing of memories.

Bill was born on June 18, 1939, son of the late William Baker Marshall, Jr, and Mildred (Humphrey) Marshall. He came from a long line of sailors – his name originated from the original William Baker, a ship captain, and his parents met when his father worked on a sailboat during the summer in Maine (before joining the Navy). Bill grew up in Needham, MA, where he was known as "Buddy". He attended Needham High School, and was a star player on their golf team, winning State Champions in 1956 and 1957. (Bill later served as a caddie in the Hawaiian Open.) His family also has ties and a long history in Maine. Bill had fond memories of childhood summers spent on Holbrooks Pond in Holden, ME with his aunt, uncle, and cousins. He attended UMass, where he played on the ice hockey team and received his B.S. in Business. He later received his MBA from George Washington University. Bill and Nancy were married on a sailboat 50 years ago in Virginia Beach where they met and lived at the time.

Bill spent his career in the US Navy as a Supply Officer. His Navy experience took him to many parts of the world, including 2 tours of duty in Hawaii and 2 tours of duty at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he retired as a Captain in 1988. His adventures included being airlifted off a ship via helicopter to make a deposit of yen in Japan, and being shot off the back of an aircraft carrier in a plane. A resident of New Castle for almost 40 years, he served as the Town Treasurer for 23 years. He was an avid bicyclist, delivering town deposits to the bank via bike. He could also often be found walking his dog(s) around town. Bill was a sweet, caring, and thoughtful person to his core. He loved his family with all his heart, and in later years enjoyed watching his grandsons play sports and perform in school concerts. He also loved and enjoyed nature, and worked to preserve it for generations to come, including volunteering for The Nature Conservancy as a Land Steward, and serving on the New Castle Conservation Commission for many years. Bill also ran the Seacoast Sailing School at the Kittery Point Yacht Club for many years, and passed his love of being on or near the water to his family.

Yesterday

My dear Uncle Bud. You were such a big part of my life. I spent a lot of time with you, especially over the summers. Your love for the ocean and lakes, and everything related to it, was something that we shared. I think it´s in the Marshall blood. I remember you as a teacher of the things you loved. You were so passionate and wanted to pass on everything you could. However, you did not love anything as much as you loved your wife (my aunt) and daughter (my cousin). That kind of love is very special and I will never forget it. I will miss you Uncle Bud .... until my last days on earth.
