Harold Russell Hoopengarner, 85, of Fountain Hills, AZ, formerly of McCoole, MD, died Saturday, October 14, 2023 at his residence while under the care of AZ Care Hospice.
Born on February 7, 1938 in Piedmont, WV, he was a son of the late Russell Paul and Lucrecia Merle (Hartman) Hoopengarner. He also was preceded in death by a son, Russell Paul Hoopengarner, II; a brother, Richard Hoopengarner and two sisters, Betty Judy and Lauvella Kimble.
Mr. Hoopengarner was retired as a calendar operator at the Westvaco Luke Mill and served in the 201st Field Artillery, West Virginia Army National Guard. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving a two year mission in Houston, Texas. He also was a member of the United Paperworkers of America Union and Hiram Lodge # 103, A.F. & A.M., Westernport, MD.
Surviving is his wife, Shirley Faye (Arnold) Hoopengarner of McCoole; three sons, Bryce Hoopengarner and wife Kathy of New Creek, WV, David Hoopengarner and wife Dawn of Strasburg, VA and Harold Hoopengarner, II and wife Lisa of Westernport, MD; two daughters, Pamela Martin and husband Allen of Fountain Hills and Deborah Hoopengarner and husband Clayton Odum of Maricopa, AZ. Also surviving are two brothers, Paul Hoopengarner and wife Cathy of Piedmont and David Hoopengarner and wife Hannah of North Carolina; nine grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Friends will be received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Wednesday, October 25, 2023 from 6-8 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. with Archie "Bill" Self presiding.
Interment will be in the Knobley Memorial Gardens, Martin, WV.
