Harold Moore Obituary

Harold E. Moore

Harold E. Moore, 86, of Charlottesville went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

He was born March 5, 1923, in Montana, to the late Rebecca and Hubert Moore.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Josephine A. (Lin-hart) Moore.

Family members include three daughters, Kathleen Houchens of Schuyler, Carol Birckhead and her husband, Clint, of Charlottesville, and Joyce Crenshaw of Richmond; three sons, Ronald Moore and his wife, Barbara, of Charlottesville, Walter Moore of Richmond, and Preston Moore and his wife, Donna, of Charlottesville; grandchildren, Chris and Denise Houchens, Thomas and Becky Houchens, Kathy Houchens and Randall Fisher, Clint Jr. and Tasha Birckhead, Todd and Katie Birckhead, Stephanie Birckhead and Carl Belew, Cindy Addington, Mark Moore, Kala Moore, Robert Moore, Gene Moore, Amanda Moore, Adriana Moore; and great-grandchildren, Cody and Kailyn Houchens, Crissy and C.W. Dunivan, Destiny Dickenson, Ryan Bishop, Christopher Birckhead, Emylie Birckhead, Paul and Lewis Addington, Alyson, Rodney and Justin Moore. He leaves behind with great love and fondness, nieces, Donna Mays and Charla Parker, and many other nieces and nephews.

Harold was a proud veteran who served his country in the United States Army from January 1, 1943 until February 13, 1946, during which time he received an honorable discharge as Private First Class. He reenlisted and served from August 9, 1948 until May 20, 1950, and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. He worked at Frank Ix and Sons as a welder for many years until his retirement and was involved in the building of Charlottesville High School.

He was an active member of the First Assembly of God in Charlottesville. His love for God and his church kept him going when his health started to decline. He would often take his two great-grand-daughters, Crissy and Destiny to church with him. Not only did they love going to church, but also spending time with him.

The family would like to give special thanks to Kathleen, Becky, Donna and Thomas for taking such good care of Harold for the past 10 years. You were there throughout his good times and especially his declining health struggles this past year. You gave him love, patience and courage. You were by his side until the end. Saying thank you somehow does not seem to be enough, however we know Harold thanks you along with the rest of the family.

The family would also like to give special thanks to Alan and Sheila Williams for being the special people that you are; and Joy and Ben Waring of whom he often smiled when speaking of your visits and taking him to lunch on Wednesdays. Thank you for brightening his day. To all the ones that touched his life, "Thank You."

A funeral service will be conducted 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville by the Reverend Pete Hartwig. A private burial will be at Holly Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Moore stopped by to see us at the office on a regular basis. He was a sweeet and kind man. We will miss him. Best wished to his family.

I have only fond memories of Uncle Harold. Big laughs (with or without teeth), lots of smiles, and always flirting with the ladies. While I have not had the privilege of getting to know all of Harolds children, grand-children, great-grand-children, etc... I look forward to gathering with you this evening to say goodbye.
