Harold G. "Buford" Schafstall, a cherished member of the Columbus community, passed from this life September 8, 2025, at the Four Seasons Health Care Center in Columbus. Born October 24, 1943, in Columbus, he was the beloved son of the late Harold G. and Hazel M. Evans Schafstall. Harold's life was a testament to his dedication to family, work, and service.
A proud graduate of Columbus High School in 1961, Harold continued his education at Franklin College, where he earned a degree in economics in 1965. His college years were enriched by his involvement with the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, forming bonds and memories that lasted a lifetime. On November 17, 1992, Harold married Mary E. Riley Gaither, who sadly preceded him in death on July 5, 2012.
Harold's professional life was marked by a 30-year career at Cummins Engine Company, from which he retired in 1995. His commitment to his community was further demonstrated through his service as a deputy coroner with the Bartholomew County Coroner's Office for 15 years and as a reserve deputy with the Bartholomew County Sheriff's Office for 20 years. Additionally, Harold worked 25 years at Fisher's Flower Basket.
Harold's dedication to his faith was unwavering as a lifelong member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. His personal interests included an avid love for collecting and working on guns, a hobby that allowed him to connect with fellow enthusiasts and share his extensive knowledge.
Harold's memory will be lovingly remembered by his daughters, Amy (Dr. Brian) Niedbalski of Columbus and Megan Seymour, of Columbus; grandchildren, Tayler Seymour (Alex Ray) of Carmel, Ray Niedbalski of Columbus and Jacob Niedbalski of Columbus; brother, John M. Schafstall of North Vernon; niece, Julie (Wesley) Boas of Nashville and nephew, Bob (Heather) Schafstall of Greenwood. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; and his sister-in-law, Rose Schafstall.
Harold G. "Buford" Schafstall lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to loved ones, and service to his community. As we bid farewell to a man of great character and warmth, we celebrate the enduring impact he has made on the lives of many.
The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2025, at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street; Reverend Robert E. Lay will officiate. The funeral service will live stream at barkesweaverglick.com. Family and friends may gather for visitation from 10 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home.
Harold will be laid to rest at the Garland Brook Cemetery. In memory of Harold, memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
