Harry G. Abel, 75, devoted husband, father, and lifelong problem solver, passed away in his
Plymouth, MA home on March 8, 2026. Harry was born in
Washington, DC in 1950 while his father worked for the Pentagon. He grew up in
Bernardsville, NJ and graduated from Bernards High School. He received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Newark College of Engineering. Harry built a life shaped by curiosity, expertise, and dedication to the people he served.
Harry began his career at Mountainside Hospital in
Montclair, NJ, where he worked as a Maintenance Supervisor. His steady leadership and hands-on expertise kept the 800-bed hospital's essential Boiler and HVAC systems running smoothly. His career then led him to American Cyanamid in
Bound Brook, NJ, where he spent almost three years helping to develop the first Computer-based Central Energy Management System for all of the on-site generated utilities (steam, electric, etc.) needed by the 400-acre Chemical Plant.
In 1979, Harry joined The Foxboro Company (later Schneider Electric) in
Foxboro, MA where he would work for more than 40 years. Harry contributed to the sale of digital industrial control systems for the Commercial Power Industry in all types of plants worldwide. He later managed a Proposal Team that generated proposals for Commercial Power customers throughout the USA. Harry was a dedicated family man, possessing a rare blend of kindness, wisdom, humor, and organizational skills.
Harry was pre-deceased by his father Harry W. from Philadelphia and his mother Marie-Louise from Dommitzsch, Germany. He is survived by his beloved wife Janice of
Plymouth, MA and his cherished daughter Lea of
Mansfield, MA; sister Karen and husband Todd of FL and IN; his niece Courtney of IN; his nephews Kyle and wife Christina of MA and Chad and wife Dorie of NY; his great nieces Kylie and Thea; his great nephews Cale, Auggie, and Calvin; his mother- and father-in-law Barbara and Bob and his sisters-in-law Nancy and Debbie, all of MA.
Beyond his professional life, Harry had a deep love of learning and exploration. When not with his family or work he spent many hours hiking in New England, discovering, documenting and publishing articles about unusual geological rock formations thought to be by the New England Indians. He was also an avid collector of antique toys, always reading a book, and a devoted New England Patriots fan for 47 years. After retirement, he also took up playing Bridge at several of the local Senior Centers where he made many new friends.
Services and interment will be private, in keeping with his wishes.
