It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harry L. Baumann Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and veteran who left us on January 11, 2025, at the age of 89, peacefully surrounded by family.
Harry was born on June 3, 1935, in Algoma, WI to Harry and Josie (Guelette) Baumann. After graduating from Algoma High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving as an infantryman from 1953-1955. After his discharge from the service, he attended the Milwaukee School of Engineering and the University of Milwaukee and became a police officer in March of 1962.
On Nov. 19, 1955, he married Gail Neubauer in Maplewood at Holy Name of Mary Church. Together they were blessed with 6 children and enjoyed 69 years of marriage. From 1962 to 1990, Harry served the public as a game warden and police officer retiring from the Fox Point Police Department as a sergeant.
Harry and Gail enjoyed a long and active retirement. They relocated to Eagle River on Kentuck Lake, where Harry continued to serve the public as a volunteer firefighter in Hiles, WI. Harry was an avid outdoorsman, spending much time hunting, fishing, cutting wood, making maple syrup, and crafting bowls and jewelry boxes from wood for family and friends. He was a good bowler and even made an appearance on the television show, Bowling for Dollars.
Harry and Gail also enjoyed traveling, taking cruises, and wintering in Florida where he spent hours in the wood shop. He especially treasured time spent with his children and grandchildren. Harry was very committed to his Christian faith and was a Eucharistic minister and always active in church activities no matter where he lived. He will always be remembered for his prowess for storytelling, his great sense of humor and his trademark phrase, "How 'bout that".
He is survived by his wife Gail; 5 children, Lynn (Steve) Abresch, Tom (Anna) Baumann, Cheryl (Alan) Ostrowski, Rene (Frank) Greguska, and Joe (Kathy) Baumann; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; in-laws, Joanne and Stan Hoffmann, and Linda Neubauer. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Mary (Tom)Tumbleson, sister Betty (Robert) Popp, brother Roy (Joan) Baumann, and in-laws, Dianne (Cliff) Tebon and Jack Neubauer.
Funeral services with military honors will be 11:00 am on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Holy Name of Mary Church in Maplewood (7491 County H Sturgeon Bay, WI 54235). The burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church on Saturday from 9:30 am until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or to Holy Name of Mary Church. Forbes Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Gail Baumann and the Harry L. Baumann Family

I am saddened to hear about the loss of your loving husband Harry. Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Harry touched many lives, and he certainly had a significant impact on my life. I feel privileged that Harry, also known as Sergeant Harry Baumann, was my field training officer and supervisor during my six years as a Patrolman for the Fox Point Police Department (1973-1979). It´s hard to believe that was forty-six years ago and I was just a twenty-four-year-old "pup".

I know that I am a better person having known and working with Harry. Harry created special chemistry among the third shift officers that not only made us an effective team but also made us better people. Harry was not the largest officer in the Fox Point Police Department, but his booming voice commanded attention and respect. Harry was an exceptional natural leader. His integrity was beyond reproach. He exuded confidence and instinctively knew how to manage the most challenging situations.

Harry was a kind and wonderful man who cared about people. He loved you and your family and spoke of you often. He cared about his officers, trained us well, backed us up on the street and with management. He treated us firmly, but fairly. Harry cared and was dedicated to the community he served.

May God Bless Harry and you and the Baumann family. You are all in our prayers.

Sincerely,
Paul Serdynski
