Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thomas McAfee Funeral Home - Downtown Chapel on Feb. 3, 2025.
Harry Goldmann, 84, of Simpsonville, SC, passed away peacefully at home on February 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Harry was born on July 14, 1940, in Breslau, Germany to Herbert and Herta Goldmann. During the war, his parents and brothers fled Breslau and moved to Bebra, Germany where 7 Neue Strasse became the family home for 60 years. From an early age, he had a love for all things mechanical or electrical and later was able to recreate a completely new and improved product. He obtained a technical engineering degree in Frankfurt prior to emigrating to the USA joining his brother, Klaus and his family in Spring Valley, NY. Harry quickly harnessed his construction skills by working for his brother's construction company and used those skills throughout his life with various home and business projects and improvements.
On November 10, 1963, Harry married Dorothy Quinn and they raised their two daughters in Emerson, NJ. Shortly after, he became VP of Engineering at Inland Dynamics, IDI in Moonachie, NJ. Here, his office walls were covered with his diagrams of car stereos and 8-tracks that later were manufactured and sold throughout the country at major chains such as Sears and Pep Boys. His career with IDI frequently had him traveling to Japan, overseeing the manufacturing of these designs. He took great pride in the many long and personal relationships he developed that later allowed him to become fluent in Japanese.
Harry became business partners with Werner W. Mashig and in 1976, he became sole owner of Short Stop Car Radio, Inc, in Nanuet, NY. He created an impressive business based solely on "word-of-mouth" reputation that spanned decades and attracted many celebrity clients. Short Stop Car Radio, Inc. became a place where customers became close friends and came by to just to share stories. He was also extremely proud to have both his daughters work alongside him.
After retiring in 2004, Harry and Dorothy followed both daughters to
Greenville, SC. Although he enjoyed retirement, he continued to pursue his love of gardening and building. Harry was always ready with tools in hand, to help the family with any project. He was an avid bowler and continue to bowl, with the occasional 300 game.
Harry loved to cook and made the best variety of soups, German dishes, and sausage-making. As he learned these recipes from his mother, he passed them on to his daughters. It was not unusual to find him mid-morning prepping with precision for dinner. He was an avid audiophile and always had the most current and impressive home sound system, that was known to literally, "rock the house." His fascination for electronics never stopped and continued to rebuild computers and always had stacks of hard drives and various items surrounding him on his workbench.
In addition to his beloved wife of 62 years, Harry (aka Poppy) is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne Gubitosa (Dan) and Gayle Spector (Andy); seven beautiful grandchildren, Nicholas, Benjamin and Emma Gubitosa, Colin, Olivia, Lilly, and Charlotte Spector; as well as Heather Stevenson, fiancée of Benjamin Gubitosa; and Selena, his beloved cat who never left his side.
Our hearts will be full of memories of "Harry-isms" and his "German ingenuity" at work. He delighted in his daughters' retelling stories and always with a German accent. We are grateful for the many years together and are blessed that he was confirmed to the Catholic Church and received last rights surrounded by his entire loving family. We love you and miss you and rejoice as you join God in heaven.
