Hazel Rouse Obituary

Hazel Rouse

March 15, 1941 - Feb. 2, 2021

SOUTH BEND, IN -

Mrs. Hazel Y. Rouse passed away peacefully with family by her side on Tuesday, February 2, 2021 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Mishawaka, Indiana. She was born in Freeport, Illinois on March 15, 1941 to the late Thomas and late Anna (Belle) Green. Hazel was a wonderful sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She lived an outstanding life and was a source of strength, support, and encouragement to so many of the people who knew her. She modeled the “Proverbs 31 Woman” to her children, grandchildren and church family.

After high school Hazel trained to become a radiologic technician at Methodist Hospital in Gary, Indiana.

While in training, she met and fell in love with Rev. Timothy A. Rouse. They married on July 11, 1964, in Freeport. They moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1966. They were married for 50 years until Timothy's death on October 18, 2014. They were the parents of six daughters (AKA Tim and Hazel's girls): Karleen (Steve) Breathett of Lexington, Kentucky; Kelli (Cedric) Buchanon of Denver, Colorado; Kimberly Hurt of South Bend; Karin White of Southaven, Mississippi; Kailah (Yul) Lee of Indianapolis, Indiana and by joyous family acclamation, the sixth daughter, Sharon Hawkins also of South Bend.

Hazel was a lifelong Christian. She was the first lady of First AME Zion Church for 24 years.

The Funeral service is 11:00 a.m. Friday with visitation one hour prior in Cobb Funeral Home. Burial to follow at Highland Cemetery.

Hazel and I were both in the music program at Freeport High School, she in the choir and I in the band and orchestra. I remember her beautiful voice and the fun we had on music-related trips to other schools so many years ago.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Sister Rouse. Sister Rouse and I shared great grand children. We would see each other at birthday and family gatherings. She will certainly be missed. You all are in my thoughts and prayers.

To the Rouse Family. We love you and we loved Sis. Rouse. She was loving, compassionate, welcoming, family oriented, and a wonderful example of what a mother, leader, sister in Christ should be. My prayers and thoughts are with the family.
