Hazel Marie West, affectionately referred to as "Rie" passed away at home surrounded by family on Saturday October 22, 2022, in Phoenix, Arizona. Born May 28, 1950, in Geneva, Ohio, she was the only daughter of thirteen children born to the late Ocie and Versie Lee West. Determined to live on her own terms she graduated from Buckeye Union High School at 15 years of age in 1967 and pursued an education at Arizona State University. She was awarded a Bachelor's of Science in Sociology on June 2nd, 1972. While in attendance she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha. After college she lived in Portland, Oregon and Boston, Massachusetts before moving back to Phoenix Arizona where she remained until she lost her fight to breast cancer. She enjoyed traveling. Spending time in Africa, Canada, and throughout the United States. She was skilled at sewing and liked to garden. She unselfishly devoted years of her life nurturing children and pouring into others. She loved on the homeless, sick, disabled, elderly and those in need. Her presence was that of peace and refuge. She was a woman of grace, patience, discipline and deep wisdom. She began each day with prayer and was a devoted follower of Christ, and longtime member of Prayer Assembly C.O.G.I.C. Surely goodness and mercy followed her all the days of her life. Hazel is survived by her four children Aundrea Brown, Promise West, Eileah West, and Jordan West. She also leaves to mourn her mother Versie Lee West and ten brothers, Ocie West, Troy West, Wisson West, Darnell West, Theautries West, Vernell West, Manuel West, Daniel West, Paul West, and Trent West. Two grandchildren Reyhlen Thomas, Cailyn Brown, and a host of extended family. She was preceded in death by her father Ocie West and two brothers Lorenzo West and Travis West.
