Helen Austin Obituary

Published by Perkins-Parker Funeral Home Cremation Services - Waterbury on Aug. 11, 2009.
Helen A. Austin – 97, of Pony Farm Road, passed away in the comfort of her home and family on Monday evening, August 10, 2009. Born in Ryegate on July 29, 1912, she was the daughter of the late Clayton A. Sr. and Jessie A. (Wood) Murray. On Sept. 12, 1934, she married Theron E. Austin in Riverton. Theron predeceased Helen on January 11, 1995.

Helen was a graduate of Montpelier High School. Following her marriage, she was busy and happy as a homemaker, raising her family and helping her husband on the family farm in Moretown. A longtime member of the Moretown United Methodist Church, Helen was active as a teacher and treasurer for the church Sunday School, was a member of the United Methodist Women and was involved in the Moretown PTA. For many years Helen raised Shetland and Welch ponies at the farm and was a familiar face at a variety of State Fairs and County Field Days where she gave pony rides to generations of families. Well known for her baking and cooking abilities, Helen made and decorated numerous wedding cakes over the years as well as baked beans and fudge for a variety of church functions. In her leisure time she thoroughly enjoyed gardening and bird watching.

Helen is survived by her children who all live in Moretown, Wilma Maynard and her husband Gerald, Marilyn Spaulding, Stanley Austin and his wife Suzanne, Harold “Hoover” Austin, and Merrill Austin and his wife, Marti; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Helen was predeceased by a son, Wendall Austin, and 3 brothers, Keith Murray, Chauncey Murray and Clayton “Tot” Murray Jr.

Memorial services will be held from the Moretown United Methodist Church on Sunday, August 16th at 1:30 p.m. There will be no calling hours. The family requests that flowers be omitted, rather memorial gifts would be appreciated to Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre VT 05641, or to the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service, PO Box 305, Waitsfield, VT 05673.

Dear Mrs. Maynard and family~~ Read in the Valley Reporter of your Mom's passing and wanted to send our condolences. Know she is in a better place now and looking down on all of you. We talked with you a few times in July when we were at our place on 100B and you mentioned your Mom, and wanted you to know you're in our thoughts and prayers.

Dear Austin Family Relatives,
I remember attending many reunions and visiting with Helen and many of you. Also, many years ago, I stopped in to see Helen with my parents Ernest and Mary Barrett. The last time I visited with her was in the early 2000's.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Dear Family of Helen Austin,
The service was a real tribute to Helen. You captured her character well! Helen influenced the lives of many as evidenced by the huge attendance today.
One of my memories of Helen is when I first joined the Moretown Methodist Church and she was the treasurer of the Sunday School. She always made sure we had what we needed, such as ordering and then wrapping plants for the children to distribute to shut-ins at Easter time. Helen was so good with animals. I remember the Siamese cat who preferred to live with Helen rather than his previous owner!
Helen's biggest legacy will be her family. May God bless you all as you cope with this loss.

Dear Wilma, Marilyn and family - I remember your Mom from my childhood at family reunions and pony rides. My favorite pony was named "Polly," as she was very gentle. Your Mom always had a big smile and a genuine, hearty laugh. My Mom (Luella Potter) thought so much of her and will miss her. Be at peace in knowing that she is with God now and that you did all you possibly could for her, especially in more recent years. Bless you all. Sorry I am unable to attend the memorial service due to another long-standing commitment.

Our deepest sympathies go out to all of the family. Laura was fortunate enough to be able to meet Helen a couple of times, and she was such a sweet person. She probably saw her when Helen was doing pony rides as that was one of her favorite things to do at events as a child. We know she will be greatly missed by many, including Aunt Mary. Please know you are all in our thoughts during this time.

Dear Austin Family,
I am thinking of you during your loss. I remember when a few of my first and second graders visited Helen to learn about Moretown's earlier years. The children wrote Helen's biography using the information she told them. These are treasured memories for me as a teacher.
