Wayne Calvin Hersey, native Vermonter and lifetime resident of Montpelier, passed away on October 5, 2025, at the age of 88. He was born on December 22, 1936, in Montpelier, the son of the late Clifton Hersey and Loretta Compo Hersey. Wayne was a graduate of Montpelier High School, class of 1954. He went on to receive his associate's degree from Leicester Junior College in Leicester, MA, in 1956. Wayne received his Bachelor of Science degree in business from Boston University, Boston, MA, in 1958.
After graduation, he returned to Montpelier to work for National Life as an auditor and later as a security analyst in the investment department.
After 12 years at National Life, Wayne decided to pursue a career in banking. He worked at the former Burlington Savings Bank, which later became the Bank of Vermont. During his 20 years, he performed numerous financial management responsibilities that pertained to all aspects of assets and liabilities management, including investments. Wayne completed his time at the Bank of Vermont, holding the position of Executive Vice President, Treasurer, and Corporate Secretary.
Wayne served on several different boards, including the Vermont State Employees Credit Union from 1992-1999; previous membership and past chairman of the Guardianship Trust of Vermont, an organization dedicated to persons with intellectual disabilities.
Outside of work, Wayne had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid bridge player and reached Diamond Life Master. Wayne was a charter member of the Apollo Bridge club and played for many years every Friday night at the Bethany Church in Montpelier. He also played extensively at the Burlington Bridge Club in Williston. Wayne traveled to Tournaments across Vermont and New England. Wayne loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with the "boys". Blackberry picking with his mother, watching the loons at Curtis Pond, swimming in Vermont Lakes, and in the Maine Ocean at Wells Beach. Wayne's other passion was watching and playing sports. He was a huge fan of the Boston Red Sox and of the Boston Celtics. Wayne played Basketball and baseball in his youth at Montpelier High School. As an adult, he played in the Montpelier Recreation Center's men's basketball league.
Wayne loved to travel, and he never missed a chance to explore new states with his children and niece, Jennifer Hersey, during school vacations, giving them amazing experiences that would last a lifetime. He believed in hard work, had a common-sense attitude, and enjoyed teaching others the value of the dollar as he lived through the depression.
Wayne loved his grandson, Trystan, and enjoyed being a part of his life. Together, they created unforgettable memories, from apple picking in the fall, spending time at camp during the summers, celebrating birthdays, traveling to bridge tournaments, and exploring the beauty of the Maine Coast.
Wayne is survived by his loving daughters, Heather Hersey of
Montpelier, VT; Heidi Hersey of Barre, VT; grandson, Trystan Snyder, and his wife Giuliana; Great Grandson, Sawyer of South Portland, ME; He is also survived by 2 nieces, Jennifer Hersey and her husband Chris Vigneault of Lyndeborough, NH; Tamara Hersey of Groton, VT; one nephew, Mark Hersey and his wife Stephanie; one great niece, Katelyn Hersey of Barre, Vt; two step sons, Joe Hayes of Waterbury, VT and his partner Kathy Francini and his children, Mya and Natalie; Doug Hayes and his wife, Heather and their 3 children, Bella, Ireland, and Cole.
Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by two brothers, Clifton "Count" Hersey and Lee Hersey, one sister-in-law, Christie Hersey, and one nephew, Matthew Hersey.
A small family graveside service took place on October 11, 2025. A celebration of life will take place at a later date.
