Helen Flom, 106, of East Grand Forks, MN passed away Thursday, March 28, 2024 at Woodside Village of Valley Sr. Living in Grand Forks.
Helen Barbara Schmisek was born on March 22, 1918 in Grand Forks, ND, the daughter of John and Anna (Winter) Schmisek. She grew up in Grand Forks and attended St. James School and Grand Forks Central High School. On January 28, 1939, she married Guy Flom in Grand Forks, ND. She was a long-time member of Sacred Heart and was active in many ministries, the VFW Auxiliary, the Blue Line Club and the Catholic Daughters. Helen enjoyed camping, reading, watching hockey, crosswords and bingo. Her true love was taking care of her family. She gardened and canned her produce, cooked and baked. She welcomed anyone her family brought home and made them feel special. In later years, she enjoyed countless games of Rummy.
She will be deeply missed by her eight children, Richard Flom (Doris) of Homestead, FL, Eileen Saunders of Grand Rapids, MN, Diane Rothschild of Gordonville, TX, Elizabeth Fontaine of Grand Forks, ND, Joel (Sue) Flom of East Grand Forks, MN, Kathleen "Kitty" (Michael) Monley of East Grand Forks, MN, David (Judy) Flom of Lakewood, CO and Brian (Cindy) Flom of Flower Mound, TX; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

May Helen rest in peace.
When I attended UND full-time from 1968 to 1971, I worked in Smith Cafeteria. Helen Flom was a unique person along with the other women who worked there in Food Services. I always told my own Mother that she did not need to worry about me while I was at college. I had all the Smith Cafeteria women making sure I was fine. I really enjoyed working there but also I thoroughly enjoyed after working breakfast hours when the ladies took their break. They invited me to sit with them at their table.
When I was a sophomore, I took up knitting. When I got stuck, Helen straightened me out. I still have the knit slippers pattern she gave me. I have knit many pairs of slippers from that pattern.
When I graduated in 1971, leaving Smith Cafeteria with the ladies is what was a very difficult time for me. For many years I kept in touch with some of the ladies including Helen. She was always smiling.
My sincerest sympathies to everyone in Helen's family. I will be sending a memorial for Masses to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Helen's memory.
God bless Helen.
Love, Mary Ann Votava Ring, Rochester, MN
