On May 21, 2024, Helen Lee Onstot, 82 of Indianola, Iowa peacefully passed away at the Kavanagh House in Des Moines, surrounded by her loving family. As her loved ones navigate life without her physical presence, they will carry Helen's memory in their hearts, finding solace in the countless cherished moments she created and the enduring love she shared. Though she may no longer walk beside them, her legacy of strength, humor, and unwavering devotion will serve as a guiding light for generations to come.
Helen was born on May 29, 1941, in Creston, Iowa, to Gilbert and Margaret Hanke. Her life's journey began with a strong foundation of love and family values, which she carried with her throughout her life. Helen graduated from Creston High School in 1959 and furthered her education at Mercy School of Nursing. In 1960, she embarked on a significant chapter of her life by marrying Chester R. Onstot, with whom she shared 64 years of love and companionship welcoming 3 children. Together, they ventured into farming shortly after their wedding, a journey that spanned nearly five decades until their retirement in 2008. Their retirement years were marked by adventure and relaxation, particularly during winters spent in the warmth of Bonita Springs, Florida.
Helen was a woman of many roles - wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her legacy is intertwined with her green thumb sharing her perfect garden produce with many, to her beautiful landscaped & manicured yard. Her unwavering attendance at her grandkids' and great-grandkids' sporting events, her daily 15-mile bike rides, and her spirited games on the shuffle court in Florida.
Her quick wit and knack for keeping everyone in line endeared her to all who knew her. Whether she was imparting wisdom or sharing a clever remark. She often attempted to teach Chet how to use the Keurig machine or remind him to dry off his feet before slipping on socks.
Above all, Helen took immense pride in her family, passionately cheering on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at every opportunity. Even when distance kept her from attending, her words of encouragement to "cheer loud" or "send pictures" were a constant source of love and support.
Helen is survived by her beloved husband Chester; children, Douglas L. (Nancy) Onstot, Craig (Brenda) Onstot, and Laurie (Mike) Abernathy. She was the proud grandmother of nine: Douglas (Jasmine) Onstot, Casey (Rahne) Onstot, Chad (Laura) Onstot, Ashley (Dustin) Dittmer, Dustin (Amanda) Onstot, Allison (Cody) Bisher, Christina Abernathy, Brandon Abernathy, and Brittany Abernathy. She also leaves behind twelve great-grandchildren: Boston, Jacey, Kensley, Avery, Alice, Bailey, Jordan, Ryder, Kimber, Cruz, Brooks & Aurora. Additionally, Helen is survived by her sister, Deanna White.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Gilbert and Margaret Hanke; brother Richard Schofield and sister Karen Ostrander.
No services planned, per Helen's request.
Memorials may be given, in Helen's memory, to Farmer's Chapel Church
Helen's approach in life was, "Work hard, get it done, & no stopping me." This unwavering determination defined her life and inspired everyone around her.
