Kernersville - Helen Joy Brooks Overcast, 94, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. She was born on February 12, 1930, in McDowell County, WV to the late Wayne and Barbara Graham Brooks. She was a faithful member of Smith Grove Baptist Church and loved reading her Bible. It would brighten her day when she would connect with her family when they shared pictures to her Grandpad. Joy was a loving and caring person who will be missed by so many.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Vernon Overcast; a son, Thomas Dale LaRue; a grandson, Barry McLaurin; and a granddaughter, Patty McLaurin.
Left to cherish her memory are two daughters, Linda Moore, and Vonna Mays (Johnny); three sons, Sterling Richard LaRue (Robin), Michael Wayne LaRue (Ann), and Dennis Ted LaRue (Ruby); two stepdaughters, Joan Thomas (Larry), and Linda Staggs (Ed); six grandchildren, Tommy LaRue, Jr. (Heath), Candi Scism (Mark), Martin Mays (Wendy), Kristen LaRue, Candice LaRue, and Abby Ward (Luke); many great grandchildren; several great great grandchildren; two half-sisters, Jannie Karpach, and Linda Moore; and a half-brother, Will Brooks (Maxine).
A funeral service will be held at 1:00pm, Monday, September 23, 2024, at Hayworth-Miller Kernersville Chapel with Pastor Bruce Freeman officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at Westminster Gardens Cemetery following the service.
