Helen Joy Shipp, 74, of Memphis, TN, died October 28, 2024. Born August 19, 1950, to the late Ira Ervin Shipp, Jr. and Elizabeth Cochran Shipp, she graduated from Messick High School and the University of Memphis. She spent several years as an elementary school teacher before earning a Master's Degree in Learning Disabilities from the University of Georgia. Helen excelled in helping students overcome learning challenges both in the classroom and through individual tutoring.
Helen was a member of Bellevue Baptist Church and a devout witness to her faith. She enjoyed volunteering with the Bill Glass Prison Ministries and with Fellowship of Christian Athletes events. She will also be remembered for her years of keeping the nursery at Faith Baptist Church in Bartlett where she also served on the custodial staff.
She leaves a brother, Charles E. Shipp (Nino), of Memphis; a sister, Beth Nott of Gainesville, GA; a sister, Kathryn Hughes (Keith), of Bartlett; and numerous nieces and nephews. Those wishing to honor her life and Christian ministry may make a donation to one of her special interests or to a faith-based organization of their choice.

I met Helen at Messick High School and we shared a couple of classes together. I remember her as being very friendly with a good sense of humor. We did a project once in an English class and I went to her lovely family home off Southern Avenue to work on it. I have fond memories of that day. Thanks to the wonders of facebook, we found each other again after many years and did some catching up. I was so sorry to hear of her death and extend my deepest sympathies to her family and all those who loved her.
