Helen Stack Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Shook's Cedar Grove Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 20, 2026.
July 25, 1938 – February 3, 2026

Helen Ann Stack, age 87, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026 surrounded by her devoted family.

Born July 25, 1938 in Rockville Centre, Long Island, she was the daughter of William and Helen Courtney.

Helen received her education at the Katharine Gibbs School and St. John's University. On November 18, 1961 she married Maurice J. Stack of Hoboken, New Jersey, beginning a lifelong partnership rooted in love, faith, and family.

A dedicated and loving mother, Helen is survived by her sister Natalie Devlin, brother-in-law Edward Devlin, and her children Marguerite DeMaio, Helen Fano and Jennifer Stack. She was predeceased by her son Edward Stack. Helen took immense pride as grandmother to Ryann DeMaio, Richard DeMaio, Vincent Fano, Michael Fano, Edward Stack, and Andrew Stack.

Helen also leaves behind her cherished companion "fur baby" Punky Stack, who brought her great joy and is now lovingly cared for by the DeMaio family.

Helen found great fulfillment in her work at the Essex County Environmental Center and enjoyed golfing, spending time with friends, and volunteering at the Verona Library, where her lifelong passion for reading was nurtured.

After relocating from Hoboken, Helen and Maurice settled in Verona where they raised their family, built lasting friendships, and created a warm and welcoming home. Helen remained in the home she loved until her passing.

A devout Catholic, Helen's faith was a guiding force throughout her life providing her with strength, comfort, and grace. While her loss is deeply felt, her family finds peace in knowing she is reunited with her beloved husband, Maurice.

Visitation will be held at Shook's Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave, Cedar Grove, N.J. 07009 on Sunday, March 1, 2026, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a service conducted by Father Peter Wehrle, Pastor of Our Lady of the Lake Church, at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Helen's memory are invited to plant a tree or flowers, make a donation to a local animal shelter, or reflect on the positive impact she made in your lives.
