Helen Diane Thiesen of Manilla, lowa, passed away June 7, 2025, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, lowa. She was 82 years old. Helen was born to Wilma (Anderson) and Fernand Thiesen on September 9, 1942, in Manning, lowa. She grew up on a farm south of Manilla and attended Manilla Community School, graduating in 1960. She then attended Northwest Missouri State College, graduating with a Degree in Music Education. Helen was a public-school teacher for many years.
Helen was proud of the fact that she was an excellent flute player. In high school she played in the All-State Orchestra. At Northwest Missouri State College, she was the principal flute player all four years. After retiring, she gave private music lessons in her home, and she occasionally played in community bands and orchestras. She was also a judge at high school music contests.
Helen enjoyed her cats, crafting, sewing, and growing flowers. She took several trips, and especially enjoyed her European vacation. Helen is survived by her sister, Barbara (Donovan) Ellis of Pierce, Nebraska, Phyllis Harlow of Des Moines; two nephews; four great nephews; cousins; and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Fernand and Wilma Thiesen and brother-in-law, Mark Harlow.
Memorials can be given to a foundation of your choice. Cards can be sent to the family in care of Barb Ellis, 54914 W. Main Street, Pierce, NE 68767.
Her committal service will be held at a later date in the Nishnabotna Cemetery near Manilla, lowa.
