Helen W. Weisbrod, born on October 4, 1932 in Trczianno, Poland went to be with her Lord on December 15, 2024 at the age of 92. She was born to Oswald and Berta Hanert who were from Germany. Towards the end of World War II, she moved to Kiel, Germany where she lived in a refugee camp for people displaced by the war in one room with her mother and younger siblings as well as another family. This is where she met her lifelong friend Sophie. As the eldest child of four children, she dropped out of school early in order to work and help provide food for her family. During her twenties, she had the opportunity to come to America with her friend Sophie. She and Sophie arrived in New York Harbor on December 1, 1955, aboard the ship The General Langfitt. They lived in Minnesota for a time and then moved to Chicago, Illinois.
A number of years later, she met the man who would become her husband, Werner Weisbrod, through corresponding by letters as they were introduced through her sister and his brother. Her future husband Werner arrived on August 14, 1965 in Chicago by plane, and they were married on October 9, 1965. They bought their first house in Niles, Illinois in 1966 and welcomed their one and only daughter, Karen.
After retiring, she and her husband moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1996. They found friendships with people in the German singing clubs, The Beethoven Maennerchor and the San Antonio Liederkranz Choir. Although she did not sing, she participated in all the activities with her husband. She and her husband were members of University United Methodist Church and volunteered there on a regular basis. Later, she became a grandmother and enjoyed taking care of the grandchildren when they were little.
Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Werner Weisbrod (2005), her grandson, Christopher Michael Pierce (2022), her parents, her sister, Henriette Hanert (2008) and her brother Adolf Hanert (2023). She is survived by her daughter Karen Pierce (husband Michael), her grandchildren, Faith Lauren Pierce, Nicole Marie Uribe, and Matthew Michael Pierce (wife Amber) and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Aurelia Czuday and nephew Nico Czuday of Kiel, Germany.
Her Celebration of Life Service will begin at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, January 6, 2025, at Cornerstone Church San Antonio. A reception will follow the service. Interment will then follow at Mission Burial Park North, 20900 IH 10 West in San Antonio. Memorial Contributions can be made to organizations that she supported, Food For The Poor, and Feed The Children.
