Obituary For Mr. Henry DeJournette, Sr.
Mr. Henry DeJournette, Sr. gained his heavenly wings on May 28, 2024, around 6:10 a.m. while a patient in Palliative Care at Moses Cone Hospital. He was born in Greensboro, NC on January 15, 1944, a son of the late Eddie DeJournette and Juanita Wharton. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Miller-DeJournette; two sisters, Eva and Annie Pearl; and one brother, Charles DeJournette.
Henry attended the Guilford County Public Schools, was a graduate of Dudley High School, and afterwards attended college for four years. He was drafted to The Armed Forces in 1965, fought in 1966, and was discharged in 1967, having served during the Vietnam Conflict. He was a Vietnam War Hero, having received the Bronze Star Medal for Heroism.
Henry was employed as a technician at Lorillard, and a technician/supervisor at Sherwin Williams Paint Company for 30 years, retiring in 1999. He was a member of Reid Memorial C.M.E. Church in Greensboro, NC.
Henry was well known as "Big Hen" and classified himself as a "Ladies' Man." His hobbies included chasing women, shooting pool, watching NFL Football (with the Pittsburgh Steelers as his favorite team). He was a strong minded man that would voice his opinion whether you liked it or not. He was well known for riding in his nice cars and wearing the sharpest clothes; and let's not forget...he always smelled good, had that toothpick in his mouth, and had those sunglasses on his face.
He is survived by three sons, Terry Neal (Cicely), Eric DeJournette, and Henry (aka "Little Henry") DeJournette, Jr. (Christine); three daughters, Machelle Martin, Shawn DeJournette, and Erica (aka "Sissy") Dejournette; four stepchildren, Eric, Kisa, Donald Lee and Denard Miller; thirteen grandchildren, Chermel Martin, Chernalle Martin-Thompson (Marcus), Quantarius Watson, Dontrel Watson, Cierra DeJournette, Tavion Neal-Blackwell, Aunyea Neal, Chosen DeJournette, Onri DeJournette, Kaneari DeJournette, Hayden DeJournette, Henry DeJournette, III, and Dymond Strayhorn; great-grandchildren, Sanaa, Shamari, Xavier, Wynter, Camieyah; a special friend, Marquita Nicholson; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Service Chapel. The family will receive friends at the chapel from 1:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m.
