Henry Waterman Heimerdinger, age 96, passed peacefully on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, with family by his side.
Henry was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he met and married Betty Koehler, his beloved wife of 70 years. He sang in the choir for many years. He served in the Army Signal Corps in Belgium and Germany at the end of World War II. When he returned, he resumed his studies at UofL s Speed School, soon graduating with a mechanical engineering degree. He applied his sharp attention to detail to all areas of his life. He crafted custom knives, carved scrimshaw, enjoyed woodworking, and captured images and developed photos and film.
Henry worked in the family manufacturing and retail business, opening and managing a store in Buechel. He went on to grow a branch into the Heimerdinger Cutlery Company. He became the fourth-generation owner, before passing the business to his son, Carl. Henry was a member of the Buechel Rotary Club, serving as president and many years as treasurer. When the club funded the installation of street lights in the neighborhood, he personally stood a ladder in his truck to tend the bulbs.
Henry was ever keen to impart his expertise. With his sons, Carl and David, he shared his love of cars. The three of them salvaged, assembled, and restored two antique cars and Betty contributed full new upholstery. For his grandchildren, he built rocking chairs and toys when they were born. When they were older, he provided the tools and knowledge to help them cultivate their own pursuits. Henry s many gifts left a lasting impression on the lives of his family and community.
Henry was preceded in death by his parents, William G. and Margaret Heimerdinger; and his brother and sister-in-law, William and Peggy Heimerdinger. He is survived by his wife, Betty; his sons, Carl (Glenna) and David (Peggy) Heimerdinger; his grandchildren, Rachel (Joseph Clements), Matthew, and Nicole Heimerdinger; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, on Tuesday, August 23rd starting at 10 AM. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Paul UMC or a charity of your choice.
