Henry Carlton Ward, Sr (1929-2025), formerly of Bells, TN and Pittsburgh, PA, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 at his residence in Danbury, CT on Saturday, November 15, 2025.
Known as a true Southern gentleman, he was loved by all who had the good fortune of sharing a part of his life's journey.
He was born in Bells on June 4, 1929 to Joseph Henry and Mary (Griffin) Ward. He spent his early years on the family farm, where he married and started a family of his own, before moving to Pittsburgh in the 1950s. He worked as a machinist for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette until retiring in the 1990s. During that time, he remarried and started a second career managing a group of car washes in the Pittsburgh area. At the age of 94, he moved to Connecticut to spend his remaining years with his son's family.
Henry (also known by his friends as Hank or Carlton) was preceded in death by his first wife Peggy Williams Ward, his second wife Martha Carol Ward, and his brothers and sisters James Ward, Bobby Joe Ward, Druscilla Scates and Aurelia "Amy" Foster. He is survived by his brothers Cary Ward and Wiley "Bubba" Ward, his son Henry Ward, Jr, his daughter in-law Sue Ward, and a long list of step children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.
He loved boating, water skiing and snow skiing and shared his passion for those sports with a countless number of families and friends. As a recognized self-made "master of all trades," he unselfishly committed years of his personal time to helping neighbors, friends and strangers in need - with roadside auto repairs, home improvement projects and all seasons property maintenance.
Cornell Memorial Home in Danbury has been entrusted with his funeral arrangements. His remains will be returned to the family farm in Bells during a special remembrance service, at a date to be determined.
Memories and condolences may be posted at www.CornellMemorial.com.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests a memorial contribution to a charity of one's choice.
