Henry Zanotti, 88, of Jersey City, New Jersey passed away on July 11, 2024. He was a devout
Catholic and member of Our Lady of Mercy Church in Jersey City, New Jersey for many years
where he served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.
A devoted family man, he was pre-deceased by his wife Joan Zanotti, nee Mulcahy. He is
survived by his three sons, Robert, Kenneth and William Zanotti; a daughter-in-law; his three
grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Henry was born in Manhattan, New York, and grew up in the Hell's Kitchen section with his
sister Theresa Polli nee Zanotti, brother John Zanotti and step-brothers Lino and Bruno Fellin.
He lost his father at a young age and began selling paper bags at age 14 to help his mother, also
helping her shovel and distribute coal throughout the building of cold-water flats where they
lived.
He joined the U.S. Navy where he attained his Graduate Equivalency Diploma. After serving
honorably, he married and eventually moved to Jersey City where he worked at the United
States Postal Service's Bulk Mail Center for 30+ years.
Henry was a hard worker who valued and enjoyed teamwork. Throughout his career at the
USPS, he would faithfully read his Bible during his lunch break, praying for anyone who asked
and many who didn't.
Henry was a humble man known for his charity and willingness to help. In the 1980's he did
volunteer work at St. Anne's Nursing Home where, ironically, he, his wife -and brother-in-law
would all spend time in their later years recovering from surgeries. If asked what kind of work
he did, he was content to say simply "laborer". Henry knew that the greatest love one could
have was to lay down one's life for a friend and being the laborer that he was, he did this every
day in his sacrifices for his family and those around him. He was greatly loved.
Visitation will be at the Greenville Memorial Home, 374 Danforth Ave., Jersey City on Monday, July 15th from 4-8 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Church Tuesday morning at 10 AM. Interment to follow at Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City.
