Herbert Dougherty

Herbert Lawrence Dougherty, 84, went home to glory on Wednesday, October 16. He was born at home on March 26th, 1940, lived for all but a few years and died in the only place he ever really wanted to be: on "The Hill" of Tholen Road in Candor.
Known to most as simply Herb, he was predeceased by his only love and wife of over 52 years, Jean (Schwab) Dougherty; his parents E Russell Dougherty and Clara (Tholen) Dougherty; his brother Charles and sister-in-law Susan; sisters-in-law Patricia Dougherty and Joan Dougherty; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Jim and Pat Schwab. He is survived by his daughter, Jill (Dougherty) Waldmann and husband John, son Mark and wife Amy (Simpson) Dougherty, and daughter Beth (Dougherty) Blomberg and husband Brant. He was always proud and supportive of his grandchildren: Nathan, Lauren, Noah, and Quinn Dougherty and Jack and Troy Blomberg. He is also survived by his brother Milton Dougherty and nieces and nephews, Christine and Stephen Lane, Paul and April Dougherty, Jim and Tammy Schwab, and Heather and Jason Dunphy.
A 1958 graduate of Tioga Central High School, Herb completed the IBM tool maker's course and went on to a successful career in procurement at IBM Owego, retiring as a Quarter Century Club member in 1992. Never one to stay idle, he often found some type of work that needing doing which both required assistance from his children and involved multiple pieces of equipment. He continued to enjoy preparing his annual winter wood supply until just a few years ago and was a constant presence to assist his children with home projects whenever needed (and sometimes when not). A lifelong member of Straits Corners Baptist Church, he served there as an elder for nearly 50 years. He also served on the board of Candor EMS for many years and was a founding member of the Tioga Central Alumni Association serving as either an officer or board member for 40 years. He will be greatly missed as a core member of the "Friday Morning Breakfast Group", from which he was rarely absent and tremendously enjoyed.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Richards Funeral Home, Rte. 17c West, Owego, NY, on Thursday October 24th from 5pm-8pm. A Memorial service will be held at Richards Funeral Home on Friday October 25th at 10:00am with Pastors Mark Copeland and Ralph Kelsey officiating.
