Herbert Earl Eubanks Jr., 92, passed away August 5, 2023, in Dallas, Texas. He was born September 14, 1930, in Houston, Texas to Sarah and Herbert Eubanks Sr.
While an only child, he grew up within a loving family, and he was adored by his parents. Herbert relished his time spent with his grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. He was very independent from a young age, beginning as the neighborhood paperboy, riding his pride and joy, Cushman.
In his youth, he excelled in academics and sports, both baseball and football, but his real passion was football. While attending San Jacinto High School, in Houston, Texas, he set the Texas state record of 288 yards rushing in a single game. This record held for over 35 years. Those were great years for him, and lead to a football scholarship at UCLA, where he attended his freshman year before being injured. From there, he attended Rice University, University of Houston and graduated from The University of Texas Dental School in 1957.
In 1953, he married Cindy Marie York. After graduation, he set up his dental practice within their family home on University Dr, in West University. By 1958, they had three children, Sara, Herbert III and Jeffrey, and soon found that they had outgrown their charming home. He relocated his dental practice in 1961, to the outskirts of Houston, on Memorial Dr, as one of the first dentists in the area. While treating many of the local families and friends of his children, he loved to chuckle, and strike fear into the hearts of his children, by claiming, someone told me about you today! And, too, he loved jokes and pranks, and enjoyed reliving the pranks as much as the prank itself, laughing uncontrollably! Herbert lived life to the fullest, relished every moment, and definitely did it his way!
After retiring in 1986, he and Cindy divided their time between the family ranch, and their home, on the San Jacinto River, where they enjoyed boating with friends and family, and traveling along the Gulf Coast. Everywhere Herbert went, his beloved dog, Tiger, also followed along. Football was his greatest interest, and everyone knew when it was time to clear out. He would watch football around the clock, if possible, and he was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan.
Surviving Herbert are his children, Herbert E. Eubanks III and wife, Debbie O'Quinn Eubanks, Byron Jeffrey Eubanks and wife, Donna Dial Eubanks; grandchildren, Cade Bass and wife, Rebecca Hutt Bass, Herbert E. Eubanks IV, Jordan Renee Eubanks and Kathryn Alanna Eubanks; great-grandchildren, Marek Sabatka, Parker and Elliott Bass. He is predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Cindy York Eubanks, daughter Sara Eubanks Bass, grandson Robert Dane Bass Jr. and his parents, Sarah Watts Eubanks and Herbert E. Eubanks Sr.
Graveside Funeral Service will be held at 9:00am Saturday, August 12, 2023, at Fairfield Cemetery with Bro Floyd Petersen officiating.
