Herbert Darrell Townsend, 84, of Grandview, Texas, peacefully passed away Thursday, January 15, 2026.
Born in Sims, Arkansas, he was the son of the late Herbert Townsend and Cleo Plyler Townsend. Darrell retired after 20 years of service in the United States Navy as an Inertial Navigation MK II MOD I SINS (Ships Inertial Navigation System) Technician, which was a highly specialized electronics technician where he was responsible for the installation, maintenance, alignment, and repair of sophisticated inertial guidance systems on naval vessels, particularly submarines. He was a proud Submarine Veteran serving on board of the following nuclear submarines:
USS Permit SSN594,
USS Flasher SSN613,
USS Jack SSN608, and USS Scamp SSN588
Darrell is survived by his sister Anna Lee Townsend Spivey of Corpus Christi, Texas; nieces Denise Spivey Hawkins of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Deann Spivey Serrano of Port Aransas, Texas; many great nieces and nephews; as well as special family, Adele, Jeremy, and William Evans; Robert Lester Godley; and special friends Jose Gaytan and Nohemi Olmedo.
In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by the love of his life, Ginger Lee Townsend; a brother William "Bill" Orlo Townsend; a nephew Jason Spivey; and fellow submariner and dear friend, Robert "Bob" Godley.
A funeral service will take place on Monday, January 19, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at Rosser Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Kenneth Coleman officiating.
Darrell's family will receive friends starting at 10 a.m. on Monday, at the funeral home, prior to his service.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 at Lone Valley Cemetery in Sims, Arkansas.
