COUGHLIN, Herman Donald – of Mt. Morris, age 82, died at home surrounded by his loving family, finally succumbing to his battle with dementia. Mass of Resurrection will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025 at 10:30am at St. John Catholic Church in Davison, Michigan. The family will receive visitors prior to the service starting at 9:30am. Following the mass will be a Celebration of Life until 3:00 PM at St. John Catholic Church Activity Hall.
Herman was born September 11, 1942 in Flint, Michigan to the late Donald and Dolores (Hoffman) Coughlin. He grew up in Davison, Michigan and graduated from Davison High School with the class of 1960. Herman received his Skilled Trades certificate from Flint Junior College. He proudly served in the National Guard from 1964 to 1970. On June 12, 1971 he married the love of his life, Martie Courtney in Birch Run, Michigan. Prior to his retirement in 1997, Herman worked for GM in Skilled Trades with 36.4 years of service. He was a member of the St. John Catholic Church, a former member of the Knights of Columbus # 4090, and former treasurer with St Vincent de Paul. Herman enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and woodworking. He played racquetball, tennis, and slow pitch softball. He was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, found joy in cooking, but preferred eating. Herman liked being a barber, where he never met a stranger and was a great storyteller. He coached baseball, softball, and wrestling for several years. In his golden years, Herman competed in the Senior Olympics in Florida with his wife and won several medals including gold. In addition to all his activities, Herman finally discovered his passion to DANCE!
Surviving are: Wife of 54 years, Martie Coughlin; Children, Beckie (Steve) Sterlitz, Adam Coughlin, Amanda (Cassidy) Nolen; Grandchildren, Stephen Sterlitz, Mitch Sterlitz, Sammy Sterlitz, Gabe Sterlitz; Herman was the oldest of 14 and is survived by siblings, Peggie, Bernie, Jeanie, Julie, Rita, Marie, June, Donna, Virginia, Irene, Ted, Don; in-laws, and many, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Ray Coughlin; nephew, Marty Coughlin. In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a fruit tree/bush, or simply treat yourself to a 3:00 PM ice cream.
