In Loving Memory of Hermenegildo "Gildo" Castro November 16, 1954 – April 13, 2025
Hermenegildo Castro, lovingly known as Castro or Gildo passed away on April 13, 2025, at the age of 70. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he leaves behind a legacy of humor, kindness, and strength that will never be forgotten.
Born in Galicia Spain on November 16, 1954, Castro later made his home in New York at the age of 18, where he became a beloved and familiar face in the community. For years, he proudly served Knickerbocker Village, where his work ethic, reliability, and good-natured sarcasm made him a favorite among residents and colleagues alike.
Castro was a man of simple joys and deep connections. He cherished his morning cup of coffee, especially when paired with a good soccer match. He found peace in nature through hunting and made every moment count with the people he loved most-whether traveling, sharing stories, or just enjoying each other's company.
He was married to his soulmate, Maria Castro, for 36 years. Together, they built a life full of laughter, loyalty, and love. Castro was a proud father to Denys and Alexander, and nothing brought him more joy than being "Buelo" to his grandchildren, Lucas and Alaina. His family was his heart, and he always made sure they knew it.
Known for his quick wit and sharp sarcasm, Castro never failed to make people laugh. But beneath the humor was a genuinely good man- always willing to help, a listen, and who always ended a conversation with his signature advice: "Be good."
He is survived by his loving wife Maria, his children Denys and Alexander, his cherished grandchildren Lucas and Alaina, and many extended family members and friends who will continue to carry his spirit forward.
A celebration of Castro's life will be held soon in New York, where stories will be shared, laughter will echo, and his memory will live on.
Be good, Castro. You always were. To plant a beautiful memorial tree in memory of Hermenegildo, please visit our Tree Store.
