Howard Bingham Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Olpin Family Mortuary on Aug. 28, 2024.
Our wonderful dad, Gramps, and brother, Howard R. Bingham, passed away on August 25, 2024 at the end of a full and well-lived life. He was ninety-five years old.
Howard was born in Milford, Utah on August 16, 1929, to Florentine and Nina Bingham and was one of seven children. Growing up in a small town, Howard and his two best friends went looking for adventure and found some shenanigans along the way. His brilliant mind and quick wit served them all well. "Ray and Clif got us into trouble. I got us out."
Howard received a Bachelor of Science degree from Utah State University, and went on to get a Master's Degree. He began his career as a school teacher and then high school principal. He ultimately became a successful financial planner helping educators prepare for retirement.
Howard met and then married the love of his life, Joan, on April 16, 1954, in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were together almost sixty-seven years before Joan passed away in 2021. He has been longing to be with her again ever since.
Howard and Joan had five children whom they loved deeply. They instilled in each of them the importance of kindness, compassion, and service. That everyone is our neighbor and welcome in our family. That there is always room for one more at our table. That when love abounds in a home, there is more than enough to share with the world.
From a young age, to his time as an English teacher, to being a dad, Howard was a storyteller. He was a published author, a wordsmith, and a poet. He was equally profound when quoting Shakespeare or reading a book to one of his thirteen grandchildren or thirty-nine great grandchildren. "Gramps" adored those children and they adored him right back.
Howard loved sports, as both a player and a fan. He played baseball and basketball, and was a Golden Gloves boxer. He loved watching college football – especially BYU and the Oregon Ducks. He was painfully conflicted when those two teams happened to play each other.
Howard is survived by his children Michele Campbell, Corey Bingham (Sylvia), Janet Schaertl (Mike), Tamara Bingham, and Suzanne Bingham; and his brother Gary Bingham (Sharon). He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, one sister, son-in-law Mike Campbell, and his loving wife, Joan. Their reunion is complete.
"And when love speaks, the voice of all the gods
Make heaven drowsy with the harmony."
- William Shakespeare
To Suzanne from your siblings: Thank you for taking such good care of our dad as his life was coming to a close. You treated him with incredible kindness and dignity. You walked him Home with love and grace and we are forever grateful.
At Howard's request, there will not be a public service. Instead, when your favorite team gets an interception or scores the winning touchdown, feel free to cheer extra loudly for Howard in the Heavenly Seats. When the time is right, his family will lay him to rest with Joan and celebrate the legacy of love and family that they created. It will be a joyful day.

I knew Howard's father and mother here in Milford. I became good friends with Mr. Bingham when I came to Milford in 1966 to teach shop classes in the high school. Florence was still working part time as a janitor in his 80's and would come into the shop to sweep the floors. I would generally still be there and had many good talks with him. This was at a time when his wife was not doing well healthwise. He was worried she wood soon die. Ironically he passed before she did. He worked very hard for the school district cleaning and maintaining 3 large school buildings by himself. There were only 2 buildings left when I knew him. As old as he was he cleaned better than any full time custodian. I visited him in the hospital just a day or two before he died. He looked and talked really well. It was a shock to me when he died. I always have been glad to have known him. It is good to hear he had children who were and are active members of the LDS Church. I don't remember Floren being active. He was such a good friend.
Respectfully, Leon Gay retired teacher still living in Milford.

We´ll miss our dear friend Howard, but know that he is happy to be reunited with his sweetheart Joan. It was our privilege to first meet Howard in Cottage Grove, Oregon and later in Eugene. We reconnected in Cedar Hills, Utah when we moved into his ward. Our golfing group is 2/3 gone on to the 19th hole. True friends!
