Dr. Howard F. Hurt

Dr. Howard Frank Hurt, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, a paragon of compassion and dedication, passed away on January 13, 2024, at McLaren Bay Special Care Hospital in
Bay City, Michigan. Born on June 27, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, he lived a life rich in service, love, and faith, leaving a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Dr. Hurt is survived by his wife, Susan (McCullough) Hurt, married, September 24, 1983, in Linwood, Michigan. He was a guiding light and patriarch to his children: Laura (Joseph) Janowicz, August J. (AJ) III, Stephen, James (Kristin), Robert (Robb), Kimberly (Walt) Anderson, and Danielle (Elle) Pembroke, as well as his daughter-in-law, Liisa Pembroke. Dr. Hurt was a cherished grandfather to Whitney (Andrew), James (Nicole), Keri, Bryan (Kristy), Kelly (Stephanie), Jordan (Mallory), Tyler (Natalia), Ashley, Rease, Drake, Miranda (Taylor), Madison, Montana, Mayson (Macey), Nicholas, Allison (Zach), Lizzie (Matt), Michael (Sierra), Jillian, Karsyn, Colin, Rogan, Dylan, and Greysen, a great-grandfather to 21 great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister and brother-in-law, Lynn (George) Kosmak, sisters-in-law, Joyce Hurt and Gail Eanes, and a host of special nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly.
Preceding him in death were his parents, August J. and Rose (Horky) Hurt, II, his brother, August (Skip) C. Hurt, his son, Nathan Pembroke, his in-laws, James and Eva McCullough, and his nephew Christopher Burnette.
Dr. Hurt's illustrious educational journey began at Benet Academy in
Lisle, Illinois, and continued through Illinois Benedictine College. He earned his Doctor of Osteopathy degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, then completed his internship at Chicago Osteopathic Hospital. His unwavering commitment to medicine was evident throughout his 57 years of service, to the Bay County Community.
His professional life was marked by his work in various practice locations, including
Bay City, Michigan, and East Chicago, Indiana. He held numerous hospital affiliations and was an esteemed clinical faculty member at several institutions such as Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine and Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Hurt's leadership extended to roles within the Michigan Osteopathic Association, Bay County Medical Directorship, and the American College of General Practice, where he was granted a Fellowship Award.
Dr. Hurt's interests reached far beyond medicine. He was a family man who cherished time with his loved ones, whether biking, bowling, camping, hunting, or simply enjoying the outdoors. His love for music was expressed through playing the saxophone and clarinet during his early years, and he was an avid fan of Notre Dame Football. Devoted to his community, he was actively involved with the Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, Elks Club, and served in various capacities at St. Anne's Roman Catholic Church. Dr. Hurt's commitment to service was further demonstrated through his work with the Boy Scouts of America, Special Olympics, Bay County Crippled Children, Bay County Right to Life, and as a physician volunteer at the county free clinic.
Described as loving, selfless, and faith-filled, Dr. Hurt, was a man who exemplified the very best of his profession and humanity. He touched countless lives through his medical practice, his community involvement, and his nurturing presence in the lives of his family and friends. His memory will be held in the hearts of those he loved and served, as a testament to a life well-lived. Dr. Hurt's legacy will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the profound impact one person can have on the world.
A Mass Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at the Prince of Peace Parish – St. Anne Church, Linwood, MI 48634 with Rev. Fr. Nick Coffaro presiding. The family will greet friends and family on Friday, January 26, 2024 from 2:00 – 8:00 PM at the Rivertown Funeral Chapel, Kawkawlin, MI and on Saturday, January 27, 2024 from 10:00 am until the time of service at the Prince of Peace Parish – St. Anne Church, Linwood, MI 48634.
In Lieu of flowers the family has asked a memorial to be made to Bay County Right to Life.
The family would like to say "Thank You" to everyone at McLaren Bay Regional Hospital, Special Care Facility and Rehab, as well as Ascension St. Mary's Hospital for the care provided. A special thank you goes to Emory University Hospital for Dr. Hurt's heart surgery in June 1983, which allowed him to practice for almost an additional 40 years.
