Howard Swanson, a loving and generous man, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2023, in
Algonquin, IL. Born on November 20, 1928, in Chicago, IL, Howard, affectionately known as Howie, lived a fulfilling life of 94 years. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who touched the lives of everyone he met with his kindness and warm spirit.
Howard was born and raised in Chicago, where he developed a lifelong love for the city and its sports teams, particularly the Bears and Cubs. He played football as a running back (line man) for Nicholas Senn High School, wearing leather helmets and proudly representing his school on the field. His love for animals was evident in his adoration for his dogs and his cat, Jet.
Howard began his career at the young age of 18, selling Fuller brushes door-to-door before joining General Motors at 19. He started in the parts department and worked his way up to parts manager, eventually becoming a salesman for GMC trucks. His hard work and dedication led him to own his own truck dealership, Swanson's GMC Truck of Waukesha. Later in his career, he worked with Chicago International Truck, where he remained until his retirement at the age of 86. Howard's commitment to his career was matched only by his devotion to his family, as he chose to retire to care for his aging wife, Freda.
In addition to his successful career, Howard proudly served in the Illinois National Guard, contributing to the safety and security of his community and country. His dedication to service was a testament to his generous and caring nature, always putting others before himself.
Throughout his life, Howard enjoyed traveling the world with his beloved wife, Freda, who preceded him in death. Together, they visited Mexico, Jamaica, Barbados, and the Florida Keys, toured most of the United States, and took many memorable cruises. An avid golfer and deep-sea fisherman, Howard relished the opportunity to explore new places and experience new adventures.
His interests also included collecting Chinese art, showcasing his appreciation for the beauty and culture of the world around him. Howard's diverse passions and hobbies reflected his curious and open-minded spirit, always eager to learn and grow.
Howard is survived by his loving family, including his children, John, David, and Kathy his daughter-in-law; grandchildren, Dusten, John, Shawna, and Nicole; and great-grandchildren, Dusten, Alexis, Nevaeh, Cordelia, Sydnee, Faith, Jordan, Nicholas, Milo, Ayden, and Candon.
