Edie loved learning, but only attended school up to 9th grade, then became a bookkeeper apprentice under the supervision of her older sister Greti.
She met her future husband Jan Zonneveld, a Dutchman, at a concert, while he was vacationing in Switzerland. It was a whirlwind, long-distance romance, and after their engagementon December 26, 1953, Jan immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada, and Edie moved to The Netherlands to learn Dutch, as an au pair. Edie was fluent in her native tongue, "Swiss" German(Bern Deutsch) and "high" German. She also spoke French, Italian and English.
Edie immigrated to Winnipeg in 1955 at the age of 25, the only sibling to ever move away from Switzerland. She and Jan married on October 30, 1955. Christine and Daniel arrived in 1956 and 1958 respectively.
Jan and Edie immigrated to Syracuse, NY in 1960, then moved to Lafayette, IN, where Ernest was born in 1962. From there, they moved to Jefferson City, MO, Jackson, MS and Rapid City, SD, where Dick was born in 1970. It was there that Edie began her career as a Nurses Aide, which she continued until her retirement from full-time work in 1995. In 1974, the family moved to Cedar Rapids, IA.
Edie and Jan divorced while in IA, and in 1988, Edie moved to Minneapolis. Approximately a year later, she purchased her condo in St. Louis Park, where she, and a succession of her beloved cats, Homer, Mitzy and Mickey lived till she moved to Assisted Living in March, 2020.
Edie loved to travel. Not only did she visit friends and family in Switzerland, she saw many other countries including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Spain, England, Ireland, Scotland, France,Belgium and Eastern Canada. She also toured the United States, including the National Parks, San Francisco, Niagara Falls, and New York City, and road trips with her travel buddies Gladys, Ethelwyn and Marilyn. One of her favorites of these tripsincluded a tour of Iowa barns featuring painted quilts.
Edie enjoyed exercising and communing with friends at Lenox Senior Center in St, Louis Park, ("my home away from home") and walking around her beloved Lamplighter Pond near her home. If one were to walk around the pond, you would see a bench along the path, dedicated to Edie, with the inscription "The longer you talk, the more you walk".
She was also a "Big Sister", and volunteered for many years at Peter Hobart Elementary School.
Edie was a long-time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in downtown Minneapolis. She was a member of WOW (Women of Westminster) for many years.
Her family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Chapel View Care Center in Hopkins, where Mom made her home since August, 2021, and the staff of Park Nicollet Hospice, who attended her since April, 2023, especially nurses Anita and Deidre, who faithfully visited Mom several times a week and kept the family updated.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, May 24, 2025, in the Chapel at Westminster Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, Edie prefers donations to Lenox Senior Center (952/928-6444) or Westminster Presbyterian Church (1200 Marquette Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55403).
