Indira Mehta, beloved wife, mother, grandmother ("Baa"), great-grandmother ("Baa"), sister (Induben/Indumati), and friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Jetpur, India, Indira's life was defined by her boundless love, zest for life, remarkable work ethic, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.
As the second eldest of four siblings, Indira took on the role of caregiver early in life. She walked miles to deliver food to her father and always prioritized her family's well-being. Even as a young girl, she found joy in life's simple pleasures, saving up for shaved ice and enjoying Indian movies.
At the age of 18, Indira married Harilal Mehta in Ahmedabad, India. Together, they raised six children, navigating the challenges of relocation and separation due to Harilal's career as an engineer. Despite these challenges, Indira created a home filled with love, warmth, and structure. She managed their education, home, meals, and endless visits from friends and relatives with grace and tireless dedication.
In 1988, Indira and Harilal made the life-changing decision to move to the United States, settling in New Jersey. With Harilal's support, Indira became a certified nursing assistant, paving the way for her family's transition to a new country. After her children established their own careers, Indira retired and spent her later years living with her sons Gautam and Nirav in Chicago.
Indira found joy in life's many gifts. She cherished long walks in nature, cooking diverse cuisines, and connecting with her community, making friends wherever she went. She adored hiking, exploring fashion and shopping, and traveling the world with Nirav and Sonal-exploring Europe, Egypt, Jordan, India, Hawaii, Greece, and beyond. Her time with Chitra was filled with laughter, beauty routines, and conversations about the latest trends. she loved trying new restaurants and walking through parks. She also deeply valued the time spent teaching how to make pickles, desserts and various recipes.
Her grandchildren were her pride and joy, and she devoted herself to ensuring they were cared for and well-fed-especially Avi, who was crazy about Ba's Laddoo's. Indira also shared a unique and loving connection with her beloved dogs, Sweetie and Bevo who became her loyal companions. Their long walks together brought her immense comfort, and Sweetie's fierce devotion brought light into her life.
In her later years, Indira moved to Florida, where she became a beloved member of the Indian and World Golf Village communities. Her warm and welcoming spirit, combined with her daily walks, made her a familiar and cherished presence among neighbors and friends.
Indira's life was a testament to resilience, selflessness, and unconditional love. Her legacy lives on in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
