Irma Helstrom Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Homes and Crematory - Washington St. on Sep. 24, 2024.
Irma Ruth Helstrom, 95, of Columbus, Indiana died Monday, September 23, 2024 at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, Indiana.
Irma Helstrom was born March 31, 1929, to Rev. Paul and Henriette (Senechal) Schumm in Sabin, Minnesota. She went to school in Sabin and Moorhead, Minnesota and graduated from the Moorhead State Teachers College in 1951. During Irma's youth, she became an accomplished pianist and organist and played the organ during church services as well as for weddings and funerals at her father's church.
She was a teacher in Minnesota when she met Boyd Helstrom. They were married in 1953. Irma travelled with Boyd to many Air Force bases around the country where she either obtained a teaching position at a local school or was employed as the base commander's secretary since she had exemplary typing and organizational skills. They eventually settled in Columbus, Indiana where she worked as a librarian at Lincoln Elementary School.
Irma was an avid reader and enjoyed her church family at Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus, Indiana. At Faith, she played the organ and sang in the church choir. She also loved being a grandma to her two granddaughters Kaitlin and Kelsey.
Irma is survived by her son, Joseph Helstrom (daughter-in-law, Patricia McCarthy) of Zionsville, IN; granddaughters, Kelsey Helstrom of Carmel, IN and Kaitlin LeBoeuf (husband, Alex LeBoeuf) and great grandchildren, Blakely and Remy LeBoeuf of Indianapolis, IN.
Irma's family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Otterbein Senior Living in Franklin, Indiana for their kindness and excellent care of Irma during her final years.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church in Columbus, Indiana later in October.
