Michael James Helstrom

Michael James Helstrom passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 28, 2024 at his home in McGregor, MN.
Mike (Mikko) was born March 30, 1958 to Jim and Carole Helstrom. He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1976. Mike was a "gentle giant" who was known for his soft-spoken voice, kind heart, and always present cowboy hat. He never liked being the center of attention, but as a 6'7" cowboy it was impossible not to be. He considered himself a jack of all trades and a master of none. In reality, he was a master of most things he undertook.
Mike had a successful career as a specialty painting contractor. His real passion, however, was his farm. Along with his wife Carolyn and son Jason, he ran a grass-fed cattle operation. He was sought out for his expertise on soil restoration and served on multiple livestock and foraging boards.
When he wasn't working, motorcycling and pool were his favorite pastimes. Mike had an uncanny ability to make friends from any walk of life whether it was riding his bike in Sturgis or shooting pool at The Thirsty Moose. He competed in pool leagues and was at the top of his game.
Mike enjoyed serving others whether helping a neighbor with a flat tire or volunteering on the Toivola Fire Department. His family will remember him as a loving man who was always ready with a listening ear. At a moment's notice, he was happy to invite you onto his porch or into his side by side to spend the day together.
Mike is survived by his wife, Carolyn (Hammer) Helstrom; children, Tracy, Jason(Charity) and Scott(Jennifer); 16 grandchildren; and brothers, Greg and Mark.
