Irma C. Staiger

Irma passed peacefully in the early morning on December 26, 2024.
Born and raised in Chicago, she and her parents owned a tailor and dry-cleaning store. As a result, Irma was a very good seamstress and sewed much of our clothing growing up. She was artistic and creative which was evident in her ability to paint, draw, knit and refinish furniture.
Irma met her first husband, Burton Casteel at Uptown National Bank in Chicago, where both held full time positions. Once married, they relocated to a home in Skokie, Illinois, where they raised two children, Jennifer, and Jeffrey. Burt passed away suddenly in 1971 and Irma became a single parent of two young children. Her first hurdle was having to learn to drive, as she did not have a need prior to Burt's passing. She was able to secure a full-time job at All American Bank, where she supported the bank's President, along with numerous Vice Presidents.
Irma met her second husband Herbert Staiger in 1976, married later that year, and then moved the family to Glenview in early 1977. Not long after the move, Irma left the bank and found a full-time position at New Trier High School supporting the Social Work Department, retiring in 1991. Here she met new life-long friends, that have kept in touch with Irma all these years.
She was a strong-willed woman who was a force to be reckoned with at times. The events in her life made her become self sufficient and determined to accomplish what she had set her mind to.
Irma is preceded in death by her parents, Herman, and Amalie (Kitzman) Heinzel; her first husband, Burton A. Casteel; her son Jeffrey Casteel. Irma is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Janke (Casteel) and Dwayne Janke.
