J. Whiting Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith & Smith Funeral Home - Lexington on Jan. 20, 2026.
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of JW Whiting, who transitioned on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at the age of 82. He was a beloved husband, father, uncle, brother, grandfather & friend, and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.

JW Whiting was born on November 28, 1943, in Lexington, Kentucky. Throughout his life, he touched countless people with his kindness, generosity & gentle spirit. A proud Lexington native, he graduated from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School as part of the Class of 1963.

He went on to serve his country in the United States Army from 1968 to 1971, receiving an Honorable Discharge. After his military service, JW built a long and dedicated career at the University of Kentucky, where he worked as a Professional Painter until his retirement in 2011.

Outside of work, JW found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved spending time fishing and relaxing with a good movie that brought him peace and happiness.

He is survived by his devoted wife of fiftysix years, Mozell, and his children: Juan Wortham, Toryan (Renee) Whiting, and Jayman (Felicia) Whiting.

He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Lottie Whiting; his brother, James "JP" Whiting; his sisters, LV, Virginia, Barbara, and Janette Whiting; and his daughter, Monique Whiting.

To cherish many memories, JW leaves his family; seven grandchildren: Anita, Earrika, Destiny, Jamin, Montiarra; Justin, Demetric, Trayvon, Seiku, Juan, Jamarion, Jeviell; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, saints, and friends.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, Jan 22, 2026, at Perfecting Praise Center located at 340 Lima Dr, Lex KY 40511. Visitation will be from 5p-6p and service at 6p where friends and family are invited to celebrate his life and legacy.
