Jack Arnold Hawks, 87, of
Lehi, Utah passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023 with Jack (son) and Julie (daughter) by his side. He was born in
Bell, California, on August 2, 1936 to George and Hazel May (Jessen) Hawks. He lived in California until 1945 when his family moved to
Loma, Colorado. Jack served in the Army from 1958-1961. Jack married Nancy Lee on December 25, 1969. Nancy had 2 daughters from a pervious marriage and together they had 1 son and 1 daughter.
Jack's growing up years were mostly in Colorado where his family owned a dairy farm. He graduated from, Fruita High School in
Fruita, Colorado. At age 20 he left home and moved to California and worked for Julian Noel (Nancy's father). He dated Nancy during that time. Although he loved her then, he felt too young and not ready for marriage. In 1958 Jack got a draft notice and jumped at the chance to leave.
He joined the Army for three years. He wanted to get a specific trade. He was told he could get into Diesel Mechanics which is what he wanted. When he got in, they put him in ammunition. He didn't like guns and he didn't like ammunition. After boot camp, he was sent to West Germany. He was stationed in Erlagen which is close to Nuremberg. He was there for a little over a year and a half. He was in the motor pool helping to take care of the vehicles. Six months in he got the chance to advance to Battalion Ammunition Sergeant. He was in charge of all the ammunition for servicing tanks in the 35th Armored Battalion Headquarters Company. He was a marksman.
When Jack completed his service in the Army he returned home and went back to work as a brick mason in California. It is here he reconnected with Nancy, who was now a single mother of 2. In 1969 Jack would then marry Nancy, the love of his life. He would eventually go into business for himself at AN Burke Construction. He was known on the job as "No Slack Jack". His son Jack can attest to that as he worked along side his dad whenever he could whether at work on their cars.
Jack had a special talent and ability to fix things. That came in handy with his love for old cars. His 52 Mercedes and 50 Mercury were his pride and joy and the recipients of many awards at car shows. He had a smile on his face whenever he heard the mufflers on the car or the screeching of the tires on the pavement.
After Jack retired from work, he and Nancy moved from California to
Lehi, Utah. Upon their arrival, they became very active in church service. Jack and Nancy worked for the church cannery and served as temple workers. Jack and Nancy did everything together until she passed in October 2017.
After Nancy passed Jack kept himself busy with friends and family activities. For a person who didn't like to travel, Jack became quite the world traveler. He enjoyed attending grandkids activities, including sporting events, graduations, camping, and any other crazy activity they were involved in. He was always present.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife Nancy, his parents, his brothers Robert and Jerold Hawks, and his sister Virginia Johnston. He is survived by his brother Glenn Hawks, his sister Kay Edwards, his children Jack Hawks (Sara) of
Prescott, Arizona, Julie Bosquet (Darrin) of
Brookline, New Hampshire, Glenda Walker (Hans) of
Anaheim, California, and Sherrie Yorgason of
Goodyear, Arizona. Jack is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
