Jack Hon Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Iles Westover Chapel on May 3, 2023.
Jackie (Jack) Neal Hon, 70, passed away on Thursday April 27, 2023 at home.
Jack was born on September 5, 1952 to Ernest and Zela (Carnagey) Hon. He was a lifelong resident of the Valley Junction neighborhood in West Des Moines. Following graduation from Valley High School in 1971, Jack joined the United States Navy. He served during the Vietnam War aboard the USS PYRO AE 24. He was married to Patricia Hendrickson in April 1981 and together they raised five wonderful children. After returning home from the war, he began work at Firestone and retired as a maintenance manager after 30 years. Jack was a devoted Boy Scout, earning his Eagle Scout badge at a young age. He enjoyed spending time at Camp Mitigwa and became the Assistant Camp Ranger - a role he was proud to serve in for many years. Jack was an involved grandfather and loved spending time with his six grandchildren attending car shows, taking them out to lunch, and driving around town in his Fairlane.
Jack is survived by his wife Patricia, sister Phyllis Butters, children Sara, Patrick, Rachel (Eric), Nathan (Jessica), and Katie (Jeshua), and grandchildren Levi, Addison, Emma, Maverick, Coleen, and Kezia. Jack was preceded in death by his father Ernest Hon, mother Zela Hon, sister Edith Sweeney, sister Nancy Arthur, and niece Jackie Burr.
Visitation will be held on Monday, May 8th from 6 - 8 p.m. at Iles - Westover Chapel.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 9th at Walnut Creek Church in Windsor Heights at 9:30 a.m. with a luncheon following the service. Burial will take place at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter at 12:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions can be given to Jack's family for a bench at Camp Mitigwa or to Serve Africa to help orphans in Liberia.

Patty, and the family, we are so sad for you at this time. Jack did many things so many people will remember, especially the Boy Scouts! And he sure loved his grandchildren. He will be missed by many! Hugs to all!

Jack Hon won my respect as a citizen as he expressed his love for Historic Valley Junction during the many times he spoke at the HVJ Master Plan and city council meetings during the past few years as we navigated our "new normal" in the district.

Jack won my respect as a father and grandfather as I got to know his family and legacy, in particular his son Nate, whose work ethic and devotion set the bar for others to follow.

Jack won my respect as a silent supporter when he contributed an envelope of two one-hundred dollar bills the day of the HVJ Pumpkin Walk last fall to help pay for the pumpkins we distributed at the gazebo.

Jack loved his country and served it proudly. He loved his community and defended it fiercely. And he loved his family with absolute passion and devotion.

Jack Hon was a local hero, and we will miss his guiding light.
Love and support to his family and friends.
~Debbie
