James "Jim" Edward Armstrong, affectionately known as Papa, passed away on December 13, 2023, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was born on August 15, 1943, in Raleigh, North Carolina, to the late Lawrence Clinton and Isabell Austin Armstrong.
Jim attended North Carolina State University. He had a vast, yet successful career. He served as a Registered Landscape Architect with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, where he worked on several important projects. He later worked as a financial advisor, a job which he loved and dedicated himself to for 35 years until his retirement. His commitment to his profession was evident in the positive influence he had on his colleagues and clients. Jim was also a proud veteran of the United States Navy Reserve and served with the United States Marine Corps as a Med Technician.
Jim had many interests in life, but one thing that he enjoyed most was to travel. His favorite place to travel to was Las Vegas. He loved a game of poker, any song by Elvis Presley, and spending time with those who loved him most. He was also a fan of the North Carolina State Wolfpack.
A quote from Jim's favorite singer is "Never wait for tomorrow, what if tomorrow never comes?" That is how he lived his life, with passion, embracing life to the fullest. Throughout his life, he left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He will always be remembered for his unconditional love, his strength, his wisdom, and his sense of humor.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; his sons, James and Matthew; his daughter, Peyton; his grandchildren, Morgan, Joshua, and Evangeline; his sister, Ann Smith; and his special nephew, Franklin White. He is preceded in death by his sister Betsy White, in addition to his parents.
In honor of Jim's memory, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorials be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the New Hanover Humane Society. These organizations were close to Jim's heart, reflecting his compassion for children and animals.
In the meantime, we invite you to express your condolences and share your cherished memories by visiting our website at www.wilmingtoncares.com.
